What is the Onogawa Battle (Hetsugigawa)?
It began 423 years ago on December 12, 1586.
When a combined force of over 6,000, consisting of the Chosokabe, Sogabe, and Sengoku daimyo armies joined by the Otomo army,
clashed with the 25,000-strong Shimazu army
at the foot of Tsuruga Castle, the "Hetsugigawa Riverbed."
The Otomo army was defeated in this battle.
It was a pivotal battle in the Shimazu army's quest to unify Kyushu.
With the slogan "Dreams for the youth, brilliance for our hometown Oita!", the 21st Onogawa Battle Festival will be held to promote interaction between residents inside and outside the region and to revitalize the area. On the first day, at the riverbed venue under the Onan Ohashi Bridge, the fierce "Battle of Hetsugigawa" between the Otomo-Shikoku allied forces and the Shimazu army will be reenacted, featuring a powerful display of a warrior procession in armor, a cavalry charge, and performances by fire-archery and matchlock gun squads. Additionally, the "Onan Market" will be held within the venue, selling local cuisine and regional specialties. The venue for the second day, Mt. Amamo, once had the Amamo Castle near its summit and is now maintained as "Amamo Mountain Forest Park." At the scenic "Grassy Plaza," high school brass bands and local Iyotoko Kagura performances will be showcased.
