†20 Visual Kei Rain Songs to Listen to During the Rainy Season†
The constant rain is getting annoying, isn't it?
But on days like these, there's nothing better than staying inside and listening to music.
So, this time I'd like to introduce some of my personal favorite rain songs.
I've prioritized songs that really capture the scene of the rain as much as possible.
crying rain / girugamesh
The catharsis of starting with a mellow, subdued vocal and then opening up all at once in the chorus.
Although it's a rare ballad single for girugamesh,
it's a personal favorite PV where the hooded vocalist looks great.
Both the verse and the chorus are drenched in lyrics that let you fully immerse yourself.
Ame no Orchestra / MUCC
A grand ballad featuring an orchestra, just as the title suggests.
His voice is naturally melancholic, but he sings with even more emotion here.
The lyrics even mention "early summer rain," making it perfect for the rainy season.
When it comes to writing sad songs, you can't go wrong with MUCC.
Rain / SID
With "June's Lie," it's the perfect time to listen to this.
This one is also soaked in rain from start to finish.
It feels great to hear it sung so sonorously.
The vocal quality is a bit refreshing, but it's definitely a rain song you can get lost in.
singin' in the rain / L'Arc~en~Ciel
This song is memorable for its clever live performance staging.
It's one of my favorite songs that I always sing when I go to karaoke on a rainy day.
The bouncing piano sounds like the patter of rain, setting the perfect mood.
The very lyrical line "Keep falling forever" is wonderful.
Ame wa Futari no Aida ni Furu / Unmei Kousaten
A song from the solo project of the vocalist of Matenrou Opera.
The lyric "It's raining outside, which is convenient" has a unique personality.
The combination of a city-pop sense of speed and jazzy piano is distinctive.
It's also interesting to hear this vocalist sing such straightforward phrasing.
Sayonara Rain / MERRY
The damp, gloomy lyrics and this singing voice are brilliant.
The Showa-era kayo-style, which also feels jazzy, heightens the sense of sorrow.
The PV where they hold umbrellas in the rain is also quite cool and is one of my favorites.
I started liking and listening to MERRY because of this song, so I have a strong attachment to it.
Namida Ame / heidi.
This is also a song with a Showa-era kayo-style narrative rock feel.
The combination of tears and rain doubles the sorrow; just the title alone guarantees it's a great song.
I like how early heidi. used to include songs related to the lead track on their B-sides.
It's a shame that it's a bit too early in their career to be on any streaming services.
Rainy merry-go-round / FANATIC◇CRISIS
Sandwiched between "ONE" and "Hi no Tori," it's a minor track to anyone but fans.
But the song itself follows the melodic pop-rock route that didn't betray their peak era.
It feels like every phrase is a chorus, and they are all strong.
The way the synth-guitar is used is effective and poignant.
Rain Sound Waltz / DaizyStripper
A gentle ballad with an impressive piano melody.
Furthermore, after the interlude, it lives up to its title and
shifts into a waltz time signature while keeping the melody intact—a highly difficult track.
If you can master this rhythm at karaoke, that alone is impressive.
For You Who Don't Use an Umbrella / Takui Nakajima
Takui Nakajima is an artist I recommend even to those who don't listen to Visual Kei.
Actually, when he went by the name TAKUI (his punk era), I wasn't really a fan,
but I started collecting his work from this album. (*I like TAKUI now too.)
These are gentle, supportive lyrics with a strong message.
Rainfall / MARK MUFFIN
An artist I recommend even to those who don't listen to Visual Kei, Part II.
I love the cool voice of the former NEED vocalist, who now works as a chef.
The solid backing band features members from wyse, SOPHIA, and BRAHMAN.
Since the lyrics mention a 'hot summer,' maybe this is for a bit later in the season?
in the rain / 9GOATS BLACK OUT
Personally, I'd really like to put this track first,
but since this sexy voice probably won't appeal to anyone but V-Kei fans, I placed it here.
This is my favorite 9GOATS song.
The catharsis from the downer verse to the open chorus gives me chills.
Squall / D'espairsRay
A song with a seasonal feel that is rare for D'espairsRay.
The rain continues to fall until the very end of the lyrics, so the title 'Squall' is no lie.
It includes strings and is quite melodious.
It's a favorite of mine because it shows the quality of the music beyond just the shouting.
RAIN / ENDLESS
A re-recording of a song originally included on a demo tape from their Blüe era.
When they resumed activities in 2007, I didn't know that at all,
but I decided on my own that it was cooler than the title track and it became a favorite.
The lyrics are a bit less humid, but I included it because the title is so direct.
Rain Sound Symphony / LOGiQ
A band I wish had more recognition. They might be the most obscure in this article.
Well, this song was a giveaway, so you can't get it anywhere except at auctions.
Even at the time, it was a very straightforward 'white-kei' fantasy that felt quite anachronistic.
As you can tell from the song title, this band excels at abstract expression.
RAIN / SIAM SHADE
A hard yet melodious track from their debut.
It's pouring rain, but it doesn't feel too damp; it feels quite refreshing.
It's one of my favorites among SIAM SHADE songs because it doesn't have much English.
wyse actually covered this song once (I think). I was lucky to hear it.
Melancholic / Plastic Tree
The only song in this article that doesn't have a rain-related word in the title.
Plastic Tree has so many rain songs that choosing one is purely a matter of taste.
I chose this one because it repeatedly says 'It started to rain.'
It's surprisingly guitar-driven, so it fits smoothly after the SIAM SHADE track.
Remember the rain / DELUHI
This track is on the quieter side for DELUHI.
The combination of piano and waltz time is also rare for this band.
It's a beautiful song with effective, fluffy sound effects,
and like the tracks by DaizyStripper and heidi., it's a B-side, but it's a favorite.
Tsumetai Ame / cali≠gari
This is one of the few serious-leaning songs by cali≠gari, and personally, it's one of my absolute favorites, standing right alongside 'Blue Film'.
This is the 2019 re-recorded version, and the lyrics and instruments are much easier to hear.
The arrangement is also just wonderful, truly filled with the melancholy of rain.
Rainy ~Ai no Shirabe~ / Janne Da Arc
Finally, our beloved Janne Da Arc. This song is actually about the period from winter to spring, so it's a bit out of season, but I couldn't leave it out.
What is it about this song that gives it such an incredible 'final act' feeling?
Just having this song at the end of a playlist really ties everything together.
Afterword
So, those are some of my favorite rain songs.
I didn't even include the song I used for the thumbnail.
Nice feint, right? Haha.
They will definitely make you feel sentimental, so please try listening to them while holed up in your room on a rainy day.
There are tons of rain songs in Visual Kei, so I might do a second part eventually.
After all, I haven't even included that one song by that famous band.
Including that, here is a reconstructed version using only songs available on streaming services ↓
What are your favorite rain songs?
Please let me know if you'd like.
