Why can't I do it, even though I know how?
How much time do you spend
gathering information
every day?
Learning opportunities like social media, seminars, and
study groups.
Nowadays, we can obtain information
easily, simply, and from anywhere
using all sorts of methods.
I feel we live in a truly grateful era.
By using the information we gain to
learn more deeply or
apply it across other fields,
the "web" of our knowledge
continues to expand.
The speed of our input
and the volume of our accumulation
have become richer
than ever before.
However, with a note of self-reflection,
there is something I want to be careful about.
That is, because of this convenience,
becoming an "information collector."
Even if we collect this and that,
and feel like our knowledge has increased,
the things we can actually say with confidence
that we have "changed" or "become able to do"
might be surprisingly few.
I myself
often stop and look back,
and frequently ask myself,
"Do I really feel like I've changed?"
It is said that learning
has stages.
・Information: Mere facts or data
・Knowledge: Information understood in a systematic way
・Wisdom: Knowledge digested and internalized within oneself
・Skill: The action itself, made habitual through repetition of wisdom
Only by going through this process
does learning become part of who you are,
and something you can apply to your life.
However, information collectors
stop at "Information → Knowledge"
and never progress to "Wisdom → Skill."
As a result,
a gap is created where things you think you know
cannot be done as a matter of course.
Furthermore,
if you are constantly chasing information
with a smartphone or tablet in hand,
we might be losing the time to use our five senses
more and more.
・Moving your body.
・Listening to the sounds of nature.
・Looking people in the eye and having a deep conversation.
The more such time
decreases,
the more I feel my own senses becoming dull.
I have also heard that smartphones are
very convenient tools, but at the same time,
they are devices that keep stimulating dopamine.
Before you know it,
reaction over thought,
instant pleasure over sensation
might be controlling you.
That is why, now,
I want to ask again.
In the age of information,
how can we regain our own senses?
True human fulfillment
is something that can be tasted more deeply
through action,
rather than just accumulating knowledge
and "thinking you understand."
And,
beyond that action, I believe
a sense of fulfillment unique to you and a deep appreciation of life
is waiting.
