[Video Update] How to handle internet in an old apartment: Tips for making VDSL comfortable

Hello, this is Lonstar.

Today, I uploaded a short video to YouTube, so I'm summarizing the content here on note.

I live in a renovated apartment that is over 30 years old. One thing I was a bit worried about even before moving in was the internet connection.

In newer apartments, fiber optic cables are often installed from the start, providing blazing fast 1Gbps speeds. But that's not the case for older apartments. My home is no exception, as it only supports the VDSL system using telephone lines.

A photo before the renovation; you can see the telephone jack in the back.

With VDSL, you are restricted to placing the router or modem where the telephone jack is located. Of course, you can run an extension cable, but I wanted to keep everything tucked away in an inconspicuous spot if possible.

So, before the renovation, I asked the contractor to relocate the telephone jack near my computer desk.

At the same time, I had them add more outlets, changing it from two to four. This made cable management around the desk much easier.

I used an IKEA side table to house the router and modem. Since I placed it right next to the desk, it's completely out of sight from the kitchen and fits neatly in the corner of the room.

The best part about this setup is that I can use a wired connection whenever I need to.

When I want to upload videos or download large files, the router is right there, so I can just plug in a LAN cable.

Honestly, since it's VDSL, the upload speed isn't fast. It takes time to upload videos to YouTube. However, for daily tasks like writing blog posts or attending online meetings, there is absolutely no stress. It's been about half a month since I moved in, and it's been more comfortable to use than I expected.

It's easy to give up on the internet environment of an older property from the start, but it can be significantly improved with some advance planning. I hope this is helpful for those considering a renovation or move.
