Short Short: The Calico Cat's Triple Axel
Mike was picked up by my grandmother when I was in elementary school. When I asked my mother, "How old is she now?" she said, "Sixteen." In human years, that's about eighty. She's lived a very long life. She was always with my grandmother.
"I saw it, you know."
It was my younger brother who said that. Apparently, Mike disappears somewhere at night. "Look," he said, pointing at Mike's tail. The very tip was slightly split.
Night fell. My grandmother was glued to the Olympics. My brother and I didn't miss Mike sneaking out the window. Her destination was the shrine. Cats were gathered in the precincts. One cat stood in the center and sang a song.
"It's a gathering of ghost cats."
I covered my brother's mouth as he spoke. The next cat breathed fire from its mouth. The next cat turned into a mouse. Finally, Mike spun around three and a half times as if dancing.
"That move is..."
I know it. I thought. We returned home without making a sound.
"They say it's the youngest triple axel ever."
My grandmother was watching TV, delighted. Meow. A voice came from by our feet, and Mike, on my grandmother's lap, smiled. The brown spot on her chest shone like a medal.
