A Small Problem

It seems that many people view and write on note using their smartphones.

Since I have always read and written on a laptop, I had assumed that others were also viewing it on a PC, but it seems that is not the case.

To me, writing such a large volume of text and formatting it on a smartphone is a superhuman feat.

For someone like me, who finds it troublesome to even reply to emails on a smartphone and waits until I am back at my PC to reply even if it means a slight delay, this fact was nothing short of shocking.

For me, updating from a PC, there is one problem.

That is that I cannot find a mouse that feels right.

I am fully aware that even though I just wrote that many people read on their smartphones, my problem as someone who writes on a PC might be thought of as "who cares."

However, I want to write about it this time, even knowing that.

That is how much it has been bothering me.

In the first place, I was the type who did not use a mouse when using a laptop.

Even now, I do not use a mouse for my work laptop, but operate it using the touchpad.

So, I had intended to use my personal laptop the same way, but this PC's touchpad just does not suit me.

It is strangely sensitive, and I end up clicking or scrolling in completely unrelated places.

Although I tried adjusting the sensitivity many times, I could never find a setting that felt right, and the more I used it, the more frustrated I became, so I decided to use a mouse.

However, my wife is also someone who does not use a mouse, so we did not have one in the house to begin with.

So, I ended up having to buy a new mouse, but I have one non-negotiable preference that narrows down my purchasing options.

That is that I do not want a wireless type.

I know that wireless mice are more comfortable to use.

I understand that it is smarter to be able to move freely without being tied down by a cord, but I cannot stand the two major disadvantages that arise from going wireless.

One is the fact that the mouse itself requires batteries.

If you want to operate it on its own without a wire,
you inevitably need a power source somewhere,
so while you could say this is unavoidable,
I dislike the feeling of being restricted by the remaining battery life
the moment I put batteries in.

And the second point is
that you have to operate an on/off switch.

Since you have to put batteries in, there must be a mechanism to switch it on and off somewhere,
so you have to turn the power off after you finish using it.

If you forget to flip the switch after you are done,
the battery will keep draining,
and you end up in a situation where you can't use the mouse immediately
when you want to use it because the battery is dead.

I find this unbearably annoying.

I know it's not that much trouble and I should just not worry about it,
but I just can't compromise on that.

So, I have bought and used wired mice
several times in the past.

However, wired mice have extremely limited options to begin with,
and the overwhelming majority are wireless types.

The ones I chose from such a limited selection
have a much better feel than a touch panel
and are acceptable,
but I wouldn't say they feel just right.

This is very frustrating.

The time I spend using my laptop every day is limited.
But for me, this time I spend on my morning routine
is very precious and important.

To spend that important time as comfortably and
enjoyably as possible, I want to find a wired mouse
that feels just right.

I've set various goals for this year,
and I think I'll add finding a mouse that feels just right
to that list.
