There are too many types of 'USB Type-C' and it's confusing!! So, I've summarized recommendations by use case
One night, I was looking for a cable to charge my smartphone at the dining table.
Since we don't have a sofa in our home, I'm usually at this dining table, whether I'm relaxing or taking a break from work.
The drawer next to the closet across from it had become a 'cable graveyard'. It's a place where I just toss cables I'm not using.
I turned that drawer upside down for the first time in a while, and I couldn't help but stop in my tracks. Even though the cables that came out were all different—black, white, thick, thin—the shape of the connectors was exactly the same for all of them.
That slim, long USB-C.
The microUSB, Lightning, and round DC jacks that should have been there once upon a time were nowhere to be found.
'Wait, where did the Lightning cable go?'
After muttering that, I thought this was quite an event. Even though no one had intentionally tidied them up, the cables all over the house had converged into a single type on their own.
Today, I'm going to write about why and how this phenomenon of 'I realized everything had become USB-C' happened, and how it has made life easier.
✨️Finally, I will introduce the best cables for each use case!✨️

To give you the conclusion first, the culprit wasn't Apple or Google, but EU (European Union) regulations.
The day the 'strata' in the drawer disappeared
Until a little while ago, my drawer was like geological strata.
In the bottom layer, several microUSB cables were buried, for which I couldn't even remember what they were used to charge.
On top of that were chargers that came with successive smartphones. And on top of that, Lightning cables for Apple products. Different standards had piled up every time I replaced a device.
Before traveling or visiting my parents' home, this was a tedious task.
'Smartphone is this one, earphones are this one, mobile battery is yet another connector'
I would pick and sort the cables to take with me one by one. If I forgot to pack even one, I'd be stuck while out. Even though I love gadgets, I've always been bad at managing cables.
However, now, when I look at the devices at hand, this is what it looks like:
Smartphone (Google Pixel 10a) … USB-C
Earphones (AirPods 4) … USB-C
E-reader (Kindle Colorsoft) … USB-C
Portable game console (ROG Ally) … USB-C
Mouse (Logicool MX MASTER 3S) … USB-C
Portable monitor (JAPANNEXT) … USB-C
Laptop for travel (Fujitsu Lifebook) … Supports USB-C power delivery
In short, while sitting at the dining table, I was able to charge almost everything in the house just by swapping out one cable.
The ritual of sorting is no longer necessary.
Even when I take my Lifebook to Starbucks or McDonald's on the weekend to write notes, all I throw in my bag is a USB-C cable and one small charger.
To be honest, there are exceptions. The Logicool keyboard 'K380s' that I type on every day still runs on AAA batteries. It doesn't even charge.
Even though my whole house has been unified with USB-C, the fact that the keyboard I use the most still uses batteries is a punchline that makes me laugh a little.
Still, the fact that the 'strata' of cables has disappeared from my drawer is an undeniable change.
Why did everything become USB-C? — The EU's 'nudge'
What I want to consider here is, 'Why did this happen on its own?'
It's not that manufacturers aligned their efforts out of goodwill. The trigger was a law called the 'Common Charger Directive' (Directive (EU) 2022/2380) decided by the EU in 2022. Roughly speaking, it's a rule that says, 'Standardize the charging ports of electronic devices sold in the EU to USB-C.'
The implementation timing was phased.
From December 28, 2024 ... USB-C becomes mandatory for many devices around you, such as smartphones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, headsets, portable game consoles, portable speakers, e-readers, keyboards, mice, and earphones.
From April 28, 2026 ... Laptops will also be added to this scope.
The reason the EU created this rule was mainly to 'reduce waste.' It is said that chargers that were thrown away without being used generated approximately 11,000 tons of electronic waste per year in the EU alone.
Furthermore, there was an estimate that by eliminating the need to rebuy cables and chargers, consumers could save approximately 250 million euros per year.
It's for the environment, and it's also for our wallets.
The most interesting part here is that Apple, of all companies, gave in.
For a long time, Apple has protected its proprietary Lightning connector. The mechanism of earning money through genuine cables and accessories must have been one of the pillars supporting Apple's 'closed world'.
Even so, they couldn't go against the EU's rules, and the iPhone finally steered toward USB-C.
Even the most stubborn manufacturer in the world followed a single standard in the face of a nudge from the administration.
Working in general affairs, I often encounter situations where rules change the movement of people and things all at once. The fact that administrative rules were what finally decided the 'unification of charging terminals,' which could not be settled through market competition,—is, when you think about it, quite ironic and feels like a symbolic event.
The 'subtle but effective' freedom brought by unification
What unification to USB-C has given us isn't flashy. But it is effective.
The biggest thing is that the mountain of chargers has disappeared.
In the past, you needed as many chargers as you had devices, and the area around the desk in the living room was cluttered with power strips and chargers. Now, with just one small so-called GaN (gallium nitride) charger, you can power multiple devices at once. Just having the area around the outlet look tidy has changed the atmosphere of my desk.
I've also become lighter when going out. As I wrote before, my cafe work is for writing notes on the weekend, not something grand like a business trip or working at a hotel.
Even so, when taking out my Lifebook, smartphone, and earphones, being able to manage charging with 'one cable and one charger' was more relaxing than I imagined. My bag became lighter, and the 'checklist of things to bring' in my head became shorter.
This also connects to the sense of digital minimalism I have been writing about for a long time.
When cables are physically reduced, the small stress of managing them also decreases. The empty space on the desk becomes the empty space in your heart. It's just a cable, but it's more than just a cable. I realized that rather than adding a new gadget, 'reducing cables to one type' can make life much lighter.
When we talk about technological progress, we tend to think of new smartphones and AI that come out every year. But I think this kind of subtle progress of 'standardizing to one' is what gradually makes daily life easier.
The tail of the 'miniature garden' that still remains
However, it is a bit risky to say without reservation that 'the world has become peaceful with USB-C'. I will write this honestly.
Even if the shape of the terminal is the same, the contents are not necessarily the same because of that. Even if it looks like the same USB-C,
Charging speed (whether it supports USB Power Delivery or PPS beyond that)
Data transfer speed (whether the content is USB 2.0 or something high-speed)
Whether it supports video output (whether it will display when connected to a monitor)
These things vary from cable to cable and device to device.
'It says USB-C, but for some reason charging is slow' or 'It's the same shape but it doesn't show up on the monitor'—I'm sure there are many people who have had experiences like this.
The shape has been unified, but the performance is not monolithic. This is probably the most confusing part of USB-C today.
That is why I make sure to choose cables and chargers from reliable manufacturers like UGREEN and Anker.
I wrote before about being surrounded by Chinese brand accessories (The story of a desk filled with Anker, UGREEN, Xiaomi, and SwitchBot after realizing I was surrounded by Chinese brands), and the quality of a single cable directly affects charging speed and data transfer.
If you choose based solely on price, you might end up with a minor loss where "the shape fits, but it doesn't perform as expected."
Even with the same USB-C, the internals are different—the "3 roles" and the ✨️one cable that fits each✨️
So, what should you choose from the mountain of cables available? This is the most practical part of this article, so I will write it a bit carefully.
USB-C can be easily organized by looking at its three roles: "(1) Charging," "(2) Data Transfer," and "(3) Video Output."
What you can do depends on how many of these three roles a single cable supports. Conversely, the assumption that "it's USB-C, so everything is the same" leads to the "minor loss" mentioned earlier.
✨️Here is a summary✨️

(1) Charging (USB Power Delivery) — Look for the "wattage"
For charging smartphones or earphones, a few watts of power is enough. However, to charge a laptop, you need anywhere from several dozen to 100 watts of power. The common rule for this power supply is USB Power Delivery (USB PD).
Conventional USB PD was up to 100W.
The new USB PD 3.1 supports up to 240W. The reason the EU included "240W support" as a condition for the USB-C mandate for laptops (April 2026) is to ensure that even laptops can be covered by a single cable.
Furthermore, there is a mechanism called PPS (Programmable Power Supply), which finely adjusts voltage to suppress heat and charge efficiently. This is effective for fast-charging smartphones like the Pixel.
How to choose a product: If you only use it for smartphones or earphones, a cheap cable like the one included is sufficient. If you want to charge your laptop with a single cable, you can't go wrong by choosing a cable from Anker or UGREEN that claims "240W (USB PD 3.1) support." On the charger side, small, multi-port GaN (Gallium Nitride) models will keep your desk area tidy. (→ Link location for 240W cables and GaN chargers)

(2) Data Transfer (USB generation) — Look for "Gbps"
Even with the same USB-C, data transfer speeds are completely different depending on the generation. This is the most misunderstood part.
As of 2026, the 80Gbps class is still a cutting-edge feature only for some high-end laptops and docks. For most people, 10–40Gbps is enough. The scary part is that you can't tell the generation at all by looking at it. If you unknowingly use a USB 2.0 (480Mbps) cable to move large amounts of data with an external SSD, it will be hopelessly slow.
How to choose a product: If you are transferring photos or videos with an external SSD, choose one that supports "10Gbps (USB 3.2 Gen 2)." If you are serious about using docks or high-speed SSDs, choose a cable that supports "USB4/Thunderbolt, 40Gbps."
(3) Video Output (DisplayPort Alt Mode) — Look for "whether it displays or not"
To plug a single USB-C cable into a monitor and output video, both the cable and the device must support a mechanism called DisplayPort Alt Mode.
The JAPANNEXT mobile monitor I use allows me to pass both power and video through a single supported cable, which is truly comfortable. Even at my living room desk, I can quickly add a sub-screen with just one cable. Conversely, if you connect an unsupported cable, you get the minor tragedy of "it's plugged in properly, but nothing shows up on the screen."
How to choose products: If you are connecting to a mobile monitor or dock, choose a cable explicitly labeled as "DisplayPort Alt Mode supported / Video output supported". The high-speed data cables mentioned earlier (USB4/Thunderbolt supported) are often also good for video, so if you're unsure, one option is to keep one of those on hand.
🔥In the end, how should you choose?🔥
If you think about it in terms of three roles, the way to choose becomes very simple.
If you only need charging, a cheap cable is enough
If you also need to pass data, get one with the transfer speed (10-40Gbps) that matches your needs
If you also need to output video, get one that supports DisplayPort Alt Mode
If you find it troublesome to use different cables for different things, keep an all-in-one cable that handles up to "240W + 40Gbps + video output" as your standard, and you won't be confused anymore. It costs a bit more, but it cleanly frees you from that small stress of "the shape fits, but it's not performing at its full potential." Don't choose by appearance; choose by use case. I believe this is the only, albeit subtle, trick of the USB-C era.

The ports are open, but the garden remains closed
And one more thing. Even though the ports have become common, manufacturers continue to build their own "gardens" elsewhere. For example, Apple has handed over the charging port to USB-C, but it still maintains its enclosure through proprietary mechanisms like the magnetic MagSafe, and speeds/features that only work between genuine products. By the way, my Pixel 10a does not support MagSafe, and wireless charging relies on standard Qi.

What the EU pried open was only the single entrance of the charging port. The garden itself is still firmly closed.
Conclusion
As I closed the cable drawer, I felt a little sentimental.
Until a few years ago, the strata of cables were so messy, but before I knew it, they had been organized into a single type. Even though I didn't try hard to organize them myself, my life had become lighter without me noticing. Isn't it an interesting story to know that behind that was a single rule decided by the EU across the sea?
We tend to think of technological progress as "the release of amazing new products." But in reality, mundane standardization, like "reducing cables to just one," is what truly changes our daily experience. It's not flashy, but looking at my nearly empty drawer, I realized that this kind of progress is what I want to cherish.
