Independent study is full of opportunities for growth!
One of the programs during the school trip is independent study.
Unlike moving around or visiting places as a large group, being able to act freely in small groups is an attractive program for the children.
We teachers also consider the time spent on independent study to be a perfect opportunity to foster teamwork and independence.
I have organized the elements that can be learned through this experience as follows.
1. Preparation and Planning
Goal Setting:
Clarify the purpose of the school trip and identify what you want to learn through your activities.
Research:
Gather information about the location and activities for the independent study and create a plan.
Role Assignment:
Define roles within the group and share responsibilities.
2. Implementation
Execution:
Carry out activities based on the plan created in advance.
Communication:
Maintain appropriate communication with group members.
Problem Solving:
Deal with unexpected events, difficulties encountered during implementation, and unforeseen problems to find solutions.
3. Reflection
Self-Evaluation:
Evaluate the results of your actions and confirm whether the goals were achieved.
Feedback:
Receive feedback from group members and identify areas for improvement.
Next Steps:
Think about the direction of future activities and learning, and set new goals.
Through this process, you can polish many important skills such as planning, cooperation, and independence.
And above all, independent study is a great opportunity to realize the joy and achievements of learning, which also leads to confidence and motivation.
Now, various unexpected events also occurred during this year's third-grade independent study.
・Not knowing how to buy a train ticket... (there are no trains in our local area...)
・Not knowing how to ride a train...
・Not being able to reach the shop...
・Getting separated from the group members...
・Not knowing the way to the meeting place...
And so on.
But these are exactly the things that should be seen as learning and opportunities for growth during independent study.
Independent study on a school trip will be an important step in the children's journey of personal growth and learning.
