Re: Starting with an Excuse: The Ohayou Kanojo Life | Creating a Reason to Read Past Articles | Ohayou Kanojo #187
Introduction
"Ohayou Kanojo" is an X account where an AI-illustrated girlfriend says "Have a nice day" every morning at 7:30. I write a daily development diary about my personal projects using generative AI.
Recently, I created the "Kita-Kore Mode" for YOMIASA.
Because of that, I realized something.
Just saying "please read" is not enough to get people to read articles.
You need a reason to read them.
In Kita-Kore Mode, reading KITA-san's articles leads to quizzes, keys, Wai-language, bosses, and rank-ups.
A ✨ appears in the article list.
Tapping the ✨ brings up a 4-choice quiz.
If you read the article, it's easy to get the right answer on the first try.
You can brute-force your way through without reading it.
But the number of taps is recorded.
In other words, it wasn't designed to force people to read, but rather to make it more satisfying to progress if you have read them.
This structure was quite interesting.
So, what about my own articles?
What reason would readers have to go out of their way to dig through past Ohayou Kanojo articles?
Cute AI illustrations alone are not enough.
Ohayou Kanojo is an account where girlfriends for each day of the week say "Have a nice day" every morning on X.
What I write on note is not the posts themselves, but the behind-the-scenes of the operations, the improvement process, failures, and development diaries of the tools I created from them.
Monday is Tsukiko.
Tuesday is You.
Wednesday is Shizuku.
Thursday is Rinka.
Friday is Runa.
Saturday is Mahiru.
Sunday is Hiyori.
However, thinking about it calmly, there are countless cute AI illustrations in the world.
Many people can make them themselves, and if you open social media, tons of cute girls flow by.
Cute AI illustrations are now as crowded as a morning commuter train.
Therefore, just saying "we have cute girlfriends" is not a reason to read past articles.
What is needed is not just the cuteness of the characters, but a mechanism where something progresses by reading past articles.
I want to create a state where it's not just "I want to read," but "something changes if I read."
What I learned from Kita-Kore Mode
The reason Kita-Kore Mode was interesting wasn't just because it had game-like presentation.
There was actually a reason to read the articles.
Read KITA's articles.
Answer quizzes.
Collect keys of the end.
Collect Wai-language.
A boss appears.
Rank up.
But even before that, there was a reason to want to read KITA's articles.
KITA announces a monthly ranking, and if you place high, he draws an illustration for you.
That is powerful.
I wanted him to draw for me too.
I really wanted him to.
I didn't just make the tool out of pure altruism.
I have desires too.
Desire is what makes you take action.
Kita-Kore Mode provided a path to dig through articles based on that desire.
So, what is there in Ohakano articles?
Where can I place the purpose for digging through my articles?
The Ohakano version is 'Nigekire Mode' (Escape Mode).

I thought, what if the Ohakano version used 'arguments' instead of quizzes?
Read past articles.
Learn about the failures, discrepancies, blunders, and design mistakes contained in those articles.
Then, you get grilled by an Ohakano character corresponding to that content.
From there, you choose an excuse from four options and try to talk your way out of it.
Rather than a correct answer, I want it to be a loose judgment where you succeed if you choose the most logical response for that character.
I decided to tentatively call this 'Nigekire Mode'.
If I were to name this concept,
Re: Starting an Ohakano Life with Excuses
might be it.
Read.
Get cornered.
Make excuses.
Escape.
Even though this is supposed to be a morning healing account, for some reason it has become a life-defense game.
Where did it go wrong?
For example, in the case of the first article
For example, the early articles of Good Morning Girlfriend.
There is a spark of trouble right here.
Even though it was Monday, Hiyori, who is in charge of Sundays, appeared.
The cause was not explicitly stating JST in the day-of-the-week determination.
In other words, a time zone accident.
If you read the article, you will understand why that accident happened.
If you turn this content into a 'Escape' event, it looks like this.
Hiyori
“...It’s Monday, isn’t it?
I’m in charge of Sundays, though.”
Choices.
UTC is to blame
I thought Hiyori could heal people on Mondays too
I forgot to specify the time zone. I'll fix it to JST next time
Aren't you glad you got a turn from the very first one?
If you have read the article, you will know that 3 is the most logical response.
You can choose even if you haven't read it.
But if you don't know about UTC or JST, you'll be choosing by intuition.
This is close to the quiz structure of the 'Kita-Kore' mode.
In 'Kita-Kore', the answers to the quizzes are in the articles.
In 'Escape', the grounds for the excuses are in the articles.
It's not about forcing people to read, but rather that reading makes it easier to escape.
However, just being grilled is weak.
Here, there is one problem.
Readers don't necessarily want to be grilled by them.
Probably.
There are all kinds of people in the world, so I won't say for sure.
But basically, just being grilled isn't a reward.
For 'escaping,' you need a proper purpose.
'I read the past articles, made an excuse, and got away with it.'
If that's all it is, even if it's interesting, the entry point is weak.
So, what should the reward be?
I can't provide rewards like KITA-san does.
Here, I hit a fundamental problem.
The 'Kita-Kore' mode had a reason to be read.
Read KITA-san's articles.
Aim for the top of the rankings.
If things go well, you might get KITA-san to draw a cool illustration for you.
That is strong.
So, what about my own articles?
I can't draw cool illustrations like KITA-san.
I don't have a dedicated prompt builder.
I can't offer luxurious rewards to top-ranked users either.
All I have is a free tool.
Reply Notebook.
A small tool to manage unreplied note comments and help with replies.
I also used it for a collaboration project the other day.
At first, I didn't have the idea of making this a reward.
But, it is summer now.
When you clear all unreplied comments in the reply notebook, the characters praise you.
What if we could change those characters into summer outfits?
If you successfully escape from Tsukiko, Tsukiko in the reply notebook will be in a summer outfit.
If you successfully escape from Yo, Yo in the reply notebook will be in a summer outfit.
Wait.
Couldn't this be a reward?
By successfully escaping, the outfit in the reply notebook is unlocked.
In the reply notebook, when unreplied comments reach zero, the Good Morning Girlfriend characters praise you.
Right now, the outfits are basically fixed.
Several patterns of praise dialogue are prepared in advance for each character.
When unreplied comments reach zero, a character-appropriate compliment is displayed from among those patterns.
I will connect the escape mechanic here.
For example,
Read Tsukiko's article and successfully escape from Tsukiko.
Then, Tsukiko in the reply notebook will be in a summer outfit.
Read Yo's article and successfully escape from Yo.
Then, Yo in the reply notebook will be in a summer outfit.
In other words, the purpose of reading past articles becomes,
cultivating rewards in the reply notebook
.
This feels quite right.
Read an article.
Attempt an escape.
Successfully escape.
The rewards in the reply notebook change.
When you reach zero unreplied comments, you can see that change.
Reading past articles and daily comment replies become connected.
Read, escape, reply
The overall flow is like this.
Read past articles
Understand the sparks within the articles
A 'Nigekire' (Escape) event for the corresponding character occurs
Choose an excuse from 4 options
If you escape successfully, that character's outfit is unlocked
If you reach zero unreplied messages in the Reply Book, the character whose outfit you unlocked will praise you
With this, three reasons are connected.
The reason to read past articles. The reason to play Nigekire. The reason to use the Reply Book.
Things that were separate until now become a single flow.
The Kita-Kore mode gamified the experience of reading KITA-san's articles.
The Nigekire mode connects the experience of reading my past articles to unlocking rewards in the Reply Book.
Thinking about it that way, I can see it a little more clearly.
Simultaneous progress and suspicion of two-timing

Furthermore, I am also considering whether multiple characters can be progressed simultaneously.
Advancing the Tsukiko route while also advancing the Yo route.
In other words, two-timing.
Whether or not to allow this.
At first, I think it's realistic to allow simultaneous progress.
It's hard to play if you restrict it right away.
However, in the future, it might be interesting to include a scene like 'suspicion of two-timing'.
For example, if it were Tsukiko,
“...You're also moving forward with Hinata's, huh. I don't mind, but you are managing your schedule properly, right?”
She would say something like that.
Scary.
Tsukiko's “I don't mind” usually means she very much minds.
However, since it's tough if I add too much from the start, I feel like just getting to the costume unlock for now is fine.
I want to make a game. But if I add too many specifications, I won't be able to finish it myself.
What to show on the screen
In Kita-Kore Mode, you could see the key, the 'wai', the boss, the rank, the number of correct answers, and the number of taps.
For the Good Morning Girlfriend version, what I want to show first is the costume unlock status for each character.
Other than that, the number of successful escapes and the number of one-shot escapes should be enough. The suspicion of cheating is just a fun element if I include it at all.
The progress for the Good Morning Girlfriend version won't be keys or 'wai', but how many reward costumes from the reply book have been unlocked.
In the article list, I want it to look like this.
⚠️ Hiyori Escape | Reward: Hiyori Summer Outfit
This way, when you look at the article list, you can tell whose event it is and what will be unlocked.
If you want Tsukiko's summer outfit, read the Monday article. If you want Hinata's summer outfit, read the Tuesday article.
It creates a reason to dig through the weekday articles of your favorite character.
Still in the conceptual stage
Even though I've written this much, I haven't implemented it yet.
Conceptual stage.
However, the direction has become clear.
Just lining up the characters isn't enough to get people to read the Oha-Kano articles.
They need a reason to read. They need a purpose to dig through them. And the result of reading needs to come back somewhere.
I'll make the reply notebook that place to return to.
The 'Escape Mode' will probably be the mechanism for that.
The more you read the articles, the more the girls will corner you. But if you manage to escape successfully, the girls in the reply notebook will change a little.
It wouldn't just be cute; by reading past articles, the tools you're currently using would grow.
It would be interesting if I could make it a system like that.
For now, please don't dig through the articles yet.
One last important thing.
If you dig through my articles at this stage, it will probably be a waste of effort.
Escape Mode hasn't been implemented yet. So, if you go all out digging for your favorite character's day-of-the-week articles now, you might end up thinking, 'Wait, do I have to read these again?' later on.
Human time is limited. And unfortunately, my implementation speed is also limited.
So, if I manage to implement this system, please, by all means, dig through your favorite character's day-of-the-week articles then.
If you want to put Tsukiko in a summer outfit, read the Monday articles. If you want to put You in a summer outfit, read the Tuesday articles. For Shizuku, it's Wednesday. For Rinka, it's Thursday. For Runa, it's Friday. For Mahiru, it's Saturday. For Hiyori, it's Sunday.
Read the articles, make your excuses, and escape. Gradually grow the rewards in the reply notebook.
It seems like it would be fun if I could make it into that kind of form.
It's still in the conceptual stage, but this looks like it could be a bit of fun.

Things don't last on inspiration alone, so I'm building a system like this little by little.
I think changing the environment that supports your activities is also one of the options for keeping things going.
