The Charm and Individuality of Pearls—How to Choose, Colors, and Modern Ways to Enjoy Them
Note: This article is a summary of the June 18, 2025 episode of the HASUNA podcast 'Gemstone Journey: Let's Go on a Journey with Gemstones'.
The Charm of Pearls, the June Birthstone
Hello. I am Natsuko Shiraki, CEO of HASUNA.
Once again, I would like to talk about the June birthstone, the pearl.
Pearls are gems that seem like miracles created by nature. I would like to reintroduce their charm, types, and modern ways to enjoy them.
Akoya Pearls—The Elegant Luster Japan is Proud Of
When people hear the word 'pearl,' many likely think of Akoya pearls first. Long cherished in Japan, these pearls are small but have a strong luster and a soft, white charm.
They have been loved for many years as jewelry suitable for life's milestones, such as weddings and entrance ceremonies. In recent years, they have also become popular with overseas customers, and Japanese Akoya pearls are highly regarded worldwide.
South Sea Pearls—A Luxurious Presence
South Sea pearls are slightly larger and have a more glamorous impression. Because they are grown in warm seas, they are characterized by creamy white or gold-like hues.
Among them, gold-toned South Sea pearls have a presence that can change the atmosphere of a room just by wearing a single one. They are pearls that combine adult elegance with glamour.
Tahitian Pearls—Enjoying Deep Colors and Individuality
Tahitian pearls, harvested in places like Tahiti, show a variety of interference colors depending on the angle from which they are viewed, such as black, gray, green, and pink.
That beautiful change is a unique characteristic that truly tickles the hearts of gem lovers. The natural dimples (blemishes) that appear on the surface are also one of the elements that make them loved as a 'look' that is one of a kind in the world.
Freshwater Pearls and Baroque Pearls—Ways to Enjoy Them Freely
Freshwater pearls, harvested in lakes, have a rich variety of shapes and colors and have become particularly popular in recent years.
Among them, 'baroque pearls,' which are intentionally not uniform in shape, are often used in unique earrings and necklaces. They are easy to incorporate into casual attire and are becoming a staple as a style for enjoying pearls more freely.
Pearl Colors and Luster—The Expressions and Stories Each One Tells
The color of a pearl naturally differs depending on the sea where it is grown and the type of mollusk. Even among Akoya pearls, there are subtle differences in shades, such as pinkish or creamy tones.
In addition, the rainbow-like brilliance unique to pearls, known as 'luster,' creates a soft and deep light.
Generally, the five evaluation criteria for pearls are 'luster,' 'nacre thickness,' 'shape,' 'color,' and 'blemishes,' but the most important thing is 'whether your heart flutters the moment you see it.'
At HASUNA, we cherish the time spent touching the individuality of each pearl and choosing the one that feels just right for you.
Modern Ways to Enjoy Pearls
While pearls were once strongly associated with formal wear, they have recently become widely incorporated into casual and unisex styles.
Whether paired with T-shirts and denim or incorporated into men's fashion, we now frequently see K-pop idols and fashion icons wearing pearl necklaces and earrings.
Now that we can enjoy them in our own unique styles, the appeal of pearls has expanded even further.
Pearls: Jewelry that accompanies life's milestones
Pearls are also jewelry that is often passed down from mother to child.
They are gemstones that gently accompany life's milestones, such as weddings, coming-of-age ceremonies, graduations, and 60th birthdays, connecting memories and feelings.
Because they are soft and delicate, treating them with care also nurtures the love and thoughtfulness imbued within them.
Time spent caring for them is also a quiet moment to reflect on yourself.
A message from HASUNA
Each pearl is a gemstone with its own unique personality and story.
Why not break free from the stereotype that they are only for formal occasions and wear pearls more freely and joyfully?
You are sure to find a piece that resonates with you.
