I met Ugo no Takenoko through the "Bocchi" project by U | Kimiiro Bunko. Therefore, this work is my "first Ugo no Takenoko work." In other words, I made my "Ugo no Takenoko debut" today.
Wow. It was amazing. Although it is a romance novel, it is hard-boiled. It is a work that would have been perfectly fine even if it had been submitted in the mystery category.
The story progresses while giving multiple meanings to the word "81".
What will become of the ill-fated woman and man?
Are the coincidental events manipulated from behind the scenes?
Is the happiness of daily life destined to be easily destroyed?
Seeing the ugly clash of national interests behind the backs of individuals made me want to shout, "I don't want a near future like this!" When I realized that events that seemed coincidental were planned for the sake of completing a mission, I felt like I was going to lose faith in humanity.
If you only hear that, you might think it's just a dark and heavy novel, right? But Ugo no Takenoko's light-hearted writing style prevents you from feeling that way. The way a person who should have been operating on cold-blooded tactics breathes life back into their dead heart upon touching the truth is also delicately depicted, making my heart ache. It is truly great that this work makes you feel not only despair but also hope.
The nail-biting battle between the operative sent from a neighboring country and the National Intelligence Agency is truly an excellent mystery. However, Ugo no Takenoko weaves in the love between a man and a woman with just the right balance.
When an operative, who was used as a pawn in national schemes and was practically a shell of a person, touches human affection, the way human emotions well up is something you cannot help but cry over as a pure romance.
There may be times when affection is unnecessary in the probing of each other's intentions between nations. However, I felt that what protects the peace of the world might be the "love" of each individual. I apologize to Mr. Higashi, the security officer who protected Japan's peace with strong conviction, but I feel that the final push for the resolution was the "love between an ill-fated man and woman."
