This Is How Much Stress Can Make Your Body Stiff
Hello.
I am Rieko-sensei,
and I teach body conditioning lessons in Kobe.
A client visited me yesterday.
It had been about six weeks since their last lesson.
The moment I touched their body, I thought,
“Huh? It’s softer than last time.”
Their joints were moving well, and they were breathing deeply.
When I asked,
“Has anything changed?”
they replied,
“Nothing in particular.”
However, as we talked, I remembered.
■ Two months ago, they were like a different person
About two months ago.
Worries about their family were piling up,
causing them to wake up many times in the middle of the night,
and they would find themselves tensing their shoulders without realizing it.
Back then, their neck, shoulders, and back were completely stiff.
Even while we were stretching, I would say,
“You’re stiffer than usual today.”
Their diet was normal.
Their exercise routine was the same as always.
Even so, just having worries can make the body this stiff.
■ When the mind lightens, the body changes too
This time, those worries had settled down.
As a result, even though they hadn't started any special exercise, their body was moving more softly than before.
When you are under stress, your autonomic nervous system enters a state of tension, you unconsciously tense your shoulders, and your breathing becomes shallow.
If that state continues, the body starts to accept being “stiff” as the norm.
■ That is why I listen carefully to your story
In my lessons, before we begin stretching, I carefully listen to not only about your body but also about your daily life, including your sleep, work, and home life.
This is because the cause of physical discomfort is not always limited to the muscles.
By listening to your stories, it is not uncommon to see the reasons why your body has become stiff, such as 'I've been busy lately,' 'I've had ongoing worries,' or 'My sleep has been shallow.'
The cause of a stiff body is not limited to just the muscles.
Lately, you can't shake off your fatigue.
Your body feels tense.
You feel like your breathing is shallow.
At times like these, it might be a sign that your mind is working a little too hard.
Whether it's physical discomfort or when your mental state is tired,
please come and see me.
