On MBTI and Harmony Levels
When watching the same movie, one person might shed tears while another silently leaves their seat—where does that difference come from?
Why not use MBTI as a "map of sensibilities" to help you gain new insights?
In this article, I will explain the meaning and application of "Harmony Levels," which quantify resonance tendencies by type.
📖 This article takes about 3 minutes to read.
🎬 Choosing movies as a "map of sensibilities"
It is not uncommon for a movie to be a "life-changing film" for one person, while for another, it ends with a feeling of "that didn't move me at all."
I believe this is not a matter of the quality of the work, but rather a question of "compatibility of sensibilities."
As an attempt to carefully visualize that compatibility, I have started a movie guide based on MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator).
In this article, I would like to summarize the concepts and usage of "Harmony Levels," which is a topic I receive many questions about.
🎯 What are Harmony Levels?
Harmony Levels are sensitivity indicators that show, by MBTI type, "how likely this movie is to resonate with you" using a numerical value.
This is not an evaluation of the work itself, but is designed to represent the "compatibility" with you.
■ Harmony Level Guide
Lv 4.5–5.0: ◎
Overwhelming compatibility. Very high probability of resonance
Lv 4.0–4.4: ◯
Deep resonance can be expected
Lv 3.0–3.9: △
Moderate compatibility. Tastes may vary
Lv ~2.9: ×
Lower probability of resonance. However, there are exceptions
While a high score means "a high probability of resonance," a low score does not mean "it is not worth watching."
Rather, encountering a movie that seems like it won't resonate might be an opportunity to cultivate sensibilities outside of your own.
🧭 MBTI is not a "mold that binds you"
I believe that the MBTI indicator is not something that dictates "you should be this way," but rather a guideline to help you notice your own tendencies in thinking and sensitivity.
Even the official MBTI organization states that "MBTI is a framework for self-understanding and is not intended for classification or diagnosis."
My movie guide also respects that fundamental position.
In short, this project does not treat MBTI as a "fixed type," but rather as a practical attempt in line with the philosophy of MBTI to apply it as a map of sensibilities to the familiar experience of film.
I also introduce a style of watching only movies that resonate with you in another article.
That is a kind of rational way of choosing, born from the desire to "be honest with one's emotions."
On the other hand, the design of Harmony Levels also includes the possibility of encounters with films outside of one's own sensibilities.
I feel that these two styles are not contradictory, but rather things that should be chosen according to one's purpose or mood.
📌 For the freedom to choose movies
There is no right answer to choosing a movie.
However, when you want to encounter a work that deeply resonates with your sensibilities—I believe that MBTI and Harmony Levels can be quiet hints for that.
MBTI is like a map for knowing yourself. With that map in hand, you can aim for the "near" today, and the "far" on another day.
I hope that in this way, your approach to movies will become a little more free.
※In this project, we are continuously verifying the "resonance structure of sensibilities" by type. For more accurate interpretation, Harmony Levels may be revised without notice. Please always check the body of each article for the latest insights.
