The day my writing returned after I made one less decision
That day, I discarded the
decision to try to write well.
Until then, I had always felt something was off.
I was writing, yes.
But it was weak somehow.
So, as a temporary measure, I
tinkered with it here and there, making revisions.
The discomfort that grew the more I tinkered
Changing the phrasing.
Reviewing the structure.
Being conscious of readability.
But the more I did, the more it drifted.
The feeling of this isn't it piled up.
So I stopped for a moment.
I re-examined
what I was actually tweaking.
That was when I realized it.
I had been thinking only about
how to make it look good.
Decisions that had increased before I knew it
In other words, my decisions had increased.
I only needed to focus on
how to convey it correctly,
but the question of how to
make it look good had crept in.
This was quite a hindrance.
- When you try to make it look good, it becomes murky
- You can no longer speak strongly
- Unnecessary explanations increase
I had experienced all of these.
Returning the moment I removed it
So I decided.
I would discard this decision.
I would look only at
whether it is conveyed. I would ignore everything else.
Once I decided that,
my hands strangely stopped stalling.
My writing speed returned, too.
Above all, I stopped hesitating.
It was the premise that had been falling apart
Writing is a accumulation of decisions.
Which words to choose.
Where to cut.
But if the premise you decided on beforehand wavers,
everything goes wrong.
So, I reviewed it and
removed one thing.
I didn't improve my skills.
I didn't gain more knowledge.
I just removed an unnecessary axis,
that's all.
Do the opposite when things aren't going well
This is often overlooked.
When things aren't going well,
we think about what to add.
Ways of thinking or techniques.
But in reality, it's the opposite.
When things are off, you should subtract.
And not by a lot.
Just one thing is enough.
Which decision is becoming noise?
Look at that.
"Trying to keep everything important"
"Trying not to be disliked"
"Trying to show things properly"
It's usually around here.
To add or to subtract, that fork in the road
It's not that you can't write.
You're just carrying too many unnecessary things.
It is not about what to add, but
simply reviewing 'which decisions to remove'.
Your thoughts have progressed.
But you feel like you don't have to decide just yet.
