Essays from Songs: A Correspondence Between My Fifteen-Year-Old Self and Me.
I think I will try to write a "collection of letters to myself" based on this song that I listen to from time to time. You can view the lyrics information below.
To my future self.
What kind of life are you living now? Do you remember me? I am clumsy, inefficient, and my sense of justice always runs ahead of me. I live my life sometimes clashing with those around me. At school, I have both enemies and allies. The boys turn their backs on me, and sometimes I am even harassed. But I have never missed a day of school. The teachers look the other way; I suppose they are satisfied as long as I pass my high school entrance exams safely.
I think it cannot be helped. The boys are still children. They probably need someone to pick on. I was just right to be their target. They probably don't like that I don't cry and still come to school as usual. They probably can't find a place to land their raised fists.
The school teachers, my homeroom teacher. This, too, cannot be helped. It is their job, after all. Even though they are called teachers, they are younger than my parents. They graduated from university and were called teachers right away, so they have some naivety. It might be cheeky of me, but that is what I think.
I wonder what kind of adult I will become. Will I be a cheeky person who is liked by no one, living a lonely life with not a single ally? Please tell me how you are spending your time.
To my 15-year-old self
Thank you for your letter. It reached me, the future me, just fine. I remember you; you know that I have never forgotten you for even a moment, don't you?
I know, you are not alone. You are just a little stubborn. There are people who like you, and you have friends, too. You have a best friend who stood up for you. During homeroom, she raised her hand and said, "I think 1 against 23 is cowardly, that is an issue before even considering what H-san said.Talk to her properly, boys!."
When we were in our third year of junior high, two transfer students came from Tokyo to our class. Those two laughed and said this, didn't they? "What are you guys doing? I don't know what H-san did, but isn't this childish?Ignoring someone is uncool."
With that one remark, all the boys went back to normal. You gave a wry smile, didn't you? With those two and me.
"H-san, since when has this been going on?"
"Yeah, since the beginning of my second year. Thank you for stopping them. I think the boys were troubled too."
"You... are you a teacher? You're so philosophical."
Haha, like that.
Now then. I have to answer your question.
I am me. ...If I say that, it defeats the purpose, though.
Even at this age, I do not have a specific partner. There are people who see that as loneliness. But you know that is not the case, don't you? I have friends I respect. I have acquaintances I look up to. Compared to others, it is not a large number, but I have valuable people around me.
And everyone I know is someone who "stands on their own two feet."
They believe in themselves, trust those who believe in them, and live their lives to the fullest.Even if they sometimes get lost or fall, they get back up and look forward.
I will quote some lyrics from Angela's song. I think this is what you should listen to right now.
Don't give up now, don't cry, when it feels like you might disappear
You just need to believe in your own voice and keep walking
Even the adult me has nights where I am hurt and cannot sleep but
I am living in this bittersweet present
Because everything in life has meaning Don't be afraid, nurture your dreams
Keep on believing

Well then, let's talk again sometime. I believe in you. I will live my life so that you can believe in me.
