Horse Oil vs. Vaseline
Hello, this is Mogu! Today, I'm going to talk about the 'gold standard' of moisturizing that everyone has wondered about at least once.
The classic 'white petroleum jelly' or the 'grandmother's wisdom' style 'horse oil (Son Bahyu)'.
The question is, 'Which one is better?' Actually, it's not about which one is superior. The important thing is to determine which one your skin needs right now!
1. Vaseline: The ironclad 'bodyguard'
Vaseline (especially highly refined white petroleum jelly) is a mineral oil derived from petroleum.
Strengths: An ironclad barrier that 'lets nothing through.' Because the molecules are large, it does not penetrate the skin but sticks firmly to the surface. Its ability to physically block the skin from external stimuli (dryness and friction) is top-notch!
Weaknesses: A feeling of suffocation, as if 'being covered.' Because it doesn't penetrate, the 'foreign object' feeling after application can be bothersome. You might feel like your skin can't breathe, or it might interfere with your own natural sebum production.
Best for: It is perfect as a rescue team for emergencies when your skin is so damaged that everything stings when applied.
2. Horse Oil: The 'great partner' that blends in smoothly
High-quality horse oil, such as the Son Bahyu I love, is a natural animal fat.
Strengths: An amazing penetrating power that makes you think, 'Wait, is this part of me?' Because its composition is extremely close to human sebum, it sinks into the stratum corneum the moment you apply it.
Weaknesses: 'Freshness is life.' Since it is a natural fat, it can oxidize and smell if left alone. However, if you choose a high-quality product like Japan's pride, 'Son Bahyu,' that concern is minimized.
Best for: Perfect for those who want to 'bring out the skin's natural power' or 'moisturize naturally without stickiness.'
3. The greatness of 'Son Bahyu,' a masterpiece Japan should be proud of
Actually, right now, 'tallow skincare' is experiencing a massive boom in the overseas carnivore community! It is highly praised as being 'the closest thing to human skin!'
But honestly, finding high-quality tallow in Japan is extremely difficult. It's rare, and while you can find it online, it usually contains various additives and is quite expensive...
That's why we should pay attention to our very own Japanese 'Son Bahyu'!
This is actually an incredibly excellent product, even by global standards.
Best value for money: It has a quality that rivals high-end overseas tallow products and contains no additives! Yet, it is available inexpensively at drugstores.
The impact of the liquid type: The 'liquid' version in particular has an extremely high degree of refinement, as it is extracted from only the smoothest part of the horse oil. Even for those who dislike stickiness or the feeling of foreign substances, it blends in so well that you will forget you even applied it.
I really feel lucky to be able to get this quality at this price, and so easily too.
4. The ultimate is 'beef from within, horse from without'
The reason I dislike the 'feeling of being sealed' that Vaseline gives might actually be because I am already satisfied from the inside.
I am currently living a carnivore lifestyle, eating plenty of beef tallow and butter. By doing so, natural oils are supplied from within my body, and my lips are so moisturized that I don't even need lip balm.
Because I am conditioning the inside with 'beef,' there is no need to seal the outside with petroleum; it is enough to just lightly apply 'horse' oil, which blends into the skin, as a thin barrier (as a base or sunscreen substitute).
What did you think?
As I delved deeper into the carnivore lifestyle, I started to feel uncomfortable when applying Vaseline, so I switched to horse oil (Son Bahyu). It doesn't have that 'sealed' feeling, and my skin just feels so much more comfortable. Now, I spend my days with almost no foundation, just blush, horse oil, and eye makeup, and I think the 'feeling of wearing makeup' has faded, which has also reduced my fatigue.
However, it seems that securing the raw materials is difficult, and production volume is decreasing year by year... I thought, 'I should buy more to support them!' but then I faced the dilemma that it spreads so well that it never runs out lol
See you later!
