Ichigo-chan Picture Book Manga Adaptation Project Experiment
"I'd love to read this as a manga!"
Receiving such a delightful comment was the beginning of my undoing... or rather, the perfect catalyst. "Alright, let's do it!" I decided, and there's no time like the present. This time, I decided to try an experiment to see how far I could get by throwing the text and settings at an AI without any prior setup.
My partner is my usual one, Gemini.
The material will be my origin story, the "Ichigo-chan Picture Book Series."
Material used Picture Book: The Day Ichigo-chan Jumped Out of the Clock | Episode 0
I didn't just leave it all to the AI, saying, "Oh Great Demon God, please take care of it!" I poured my heart into the instructions, specifying everything from the target audience to the atmosphere in excruciating detail.
And then, the reply that came back... it was just incredible.
Art Concept (Produced by Gemini)
Color Design (Pastel & One-Point Luxury):
Worldview: The base will be unified with soft pastel tones. It will be easy on the eyes and create an atmosphere like a dream. The "colorless world" at the beginning will not be completely monochrome, but expressed in sepia and pale gray pastels to retain warmth.
1.Color Design (Pastel & One-Point Luxury):
Worldview: The base will be unified with soft pastel tones. It will be easy on the eyes and create an atmosphere like a dream. The "colorless world" at the beginning will not be completely monochrome, but expressed in sepia and pale gray pastels to retain warmth.
Ichigo-chan: This is the most important point. Only her "red" will have higher saturation than the pastels, and as requested, I will carefully draw it with a "glossy, juicy, delicious-looking sheen." I will make her shine like a lump of life within the frame.
Blue Airplane: As the first "vivid pastel blue" to appear in the sepia world, it will be drawn as a symbol of hope.
2.Consideration for Target Audience (Wide Generations):
Panel Layout and Eye Guidance: Avoid complex panel layouts and use large, spacious panels. The composition will make eye movement natural and prevent reading fatigue.
Art Style: Aim for a retro, warm, picture-book-like touch. Character expressions will be easy to understand, drawn so that emotions are conveyed directly.
Text: Use a larger, easy-to-read font for dialogue.
Now, please take a look at the manga storyboard (composition plan). I finished it as a prologue consisting of 5 pages.
"Wait... is it a genius?"
In front of the screen, the word [VICTORY] floated vividly in my brain. "If I just adapt all my short stories into manga like this, couldn't I become the queen of the manga world? I'll even conquer Kindle!"
I've pasted the 5-page composition plan (storyboard) created by Gemini, which I read through while breathing heavily with excitement. (Because of Gemini's sheer brilliance, at this moment, I could only see light in my future.)

Manga Title (Tentative): The Beginning Clock and the Strawberry Aviator
★Page 1: A sepia world, a "single drop of red" floating above a giant clock.
[Panel 1: Large Panel/Scene] (Overall sepia, pale gray pastel tones. A giant, old, yet divine clockwork "Beginning Clock" floating in a sea of clouds. Countless gears are turning slowly.)
Narration: Back when there was no "color" in this world yet.
[Panel 2: Medium Panel/Character Introduction] (Ichigo-chan sitting or floating on the minute hand of the clock. Only here, she emits a glossy, delicious-looking bright red light. Because the surroundings are dull, her presence stands out.)
Narration: Above the "Beginning Clock" in the middle of the sky, a single, small "red" was floating.
[Panel 3: Small Panel/Close-up of Ichigo-chan] (Leaning her cheek on her hand looking bored, or floating fluffily. An adorable, slightly plump design.) Sound Effect (Gentle): Tick, tock, tick, tock.
Narration: That was Ichigo-chan.
[Panel 4: Medium Panel/Conversation] (Ichigo-chan is talking to the dial of the giant clock. The clock is silent.)
Ichigo-chan: "Hey, where does time go?"
Narration: Even if she asked the clock, the clock remained silent. It just kept going around and around in the same place.
[Panel 5: Small panel, Ichigo-chan] (A big yawn.)
Ichigo-chan: "Ahhh, I'm starting to get sleepy."
★Page 2: The approaching pastel blue airplane! "The clock is going to break!"
[Panel 1: Large panel, action] (As if breaking the silence, a bright pastel blue airplane comes rushing in from the edge of the screen. A blue trail cuts through the sepia sky.)
Narration: That was when it happened.
Sound effect (approaching sound): Vrooooom...
[Panel 2: Medium panel, Ichigo-chan's surprise] (Ichigo-chan jumps up with her eyes wide.)
Ichigo-chan: "Ah! Look out!!"
[Panel 3: Medium panel, tension] (The airplane is on a collision course with the clock. Ichigo-chan looks at the cockpit.)
Ichigo-chan (anxious): It's going to crash! The clock is going to break!
Ichigo-chan: "There's no one there...! Clock, run away!"
[Panel 4: Medium panel, the clock's words] (An image of the clock's face speaking with the atmosphere of a gentle old gentleman.)
Clock: "If it crashes, it will just break."
Ichigo-chan (teary-eyed): "What!! No, you can't."
[Panel 5: Medium panel, the clock's resignation] (Close-up of gears moving slowly.)
Clock: "That's just how things are, Ichigo-chan."
★Page 3: Ichigo-chan's big jump of determination!
[Panel 1: Medium panel, Ichigo-chan's defiance] (Ichigo-chan wipes away her tears, a look of determination on her face.)
Ichigo-chan: "No! I will save the clock."
[Panel 2: Action panel] (Ichigo-chan kicks the clock's face with all her might with her short legs!)
Ichigo-chan: "Hiyah!"
Sound effect: Thud!
Clock: "Ouch. That's rough."
[Panel 3: Large panel, highlight] (The most dynamic panel in this manga. Ichigo-chan launches her small body like a bullet, making a big jump toward the approaching blue airplane! Her shiny red body glows in the air.)
Ichigo-chan (in her heart): (I'm sorry, Clock. But...)
[Panel 4: Medium Panel - Landing] (Ichigo-chan hops into the empty cockpit.)
[Panel 5: Small Panel - Action] (With her small hands, she grips the control stick, which is larger than she is.)
SFX: Grip
★Page 4: Time that has stopped. The clock's lonely smile.
[Panel 1: Medium Panel - Silence] (A momentary still image. The airplane avoided the collision, but everything is deathly quiet. No sound effects.)
Narration: That was the moment. The ticking sound vanished.
[Panel 2: Medium Panel - Ichigo-chan's Anxiety] (Ichigo-chan looks back from the cockpit.)
Ichigo-chan: "Clock-san?"
[Panel 3: Medium Panel - The Clock's Smile] (The clock hands slowly come to a stop. The entire clock looks a bit faded.)
Clock: "It seems like a screw has come loose..."
Narration: The clock smiled, so very lonely.
[Panel 4: Medium Panel - Final Wish] (The clock just before stopping. Its voice is also weak.)
Clock: "Before I stop, could you... go get the screw? ...Ichigo-chan..."
Ichigo-chan (firmly): "Yeah, I understand. Just wait for me."
[Panel 5: Small Panel - Stopped] (The hands stop completely.)
SFX (quietly): Click.
★Page 5: Wiping away tears, toward the unseen 'City of Fantasy'—.
[Panel 1: Medium Panel - Sadness] (A world that has fallen completely silent. Ichigo-chan looks down in the cockpit. Tears are welling up in her eyes.)
Ichigo-chan: "Clock-san...?"
Narration: The realization that the ordinary, comforting, ticking days until yesterday had truly ended pricked at her heart.
[Panel 2: Medium Panel - The Airplane's Encouragement] (The blue airplane gently rocks its body while carrying Ichigo-chan.)
Airplane (inner voice/atmosphere): (There's still time!)
[Panel 3: Medium Panel - Recovering] (Ichigo-chan wipes her tears vigorously with her sleeve (though she doesn't have one, she uses her arm). She looks up. Her face is no longer crying. Her glossy red color shines with determination.)
Ichigo-chan: "This isn't the time to be crying. I have to find the screw and get Clock-san moving again."
[Panel 4: Large Panel - Full View of Departure] (A beautiful panel using the entire page. Breaking through sunset-colored pastel clouds, the blue airplane soars high. Below, the gray clock grows smaller. And in the distance ahead, the lights of the 'City of Fantasy,' sparkling in various pastel colors, come into view.)
Narration: The airplane, carrying Ichigo-chan, pointed its nose toward a 'City of Fantasy' that no one knows yet.
(Marginal blurb) Meeting the Nyans is a story for after landing in this city of light...
And then, I pressed the fateful 'Output' button.
“Ohhhhh, excellent! This will work, it will work, I can do it!”
Perfect storyboard, perfect color design.
In my head, a full-color manga with a glossy Ichigo-chan running around freely was already complete.
With my heart swelling with expectation, I clicked the 'Generate Image' button with trembling hands.
......
......
...Um, I want to ask everyone. “Why, after making such a wonderful plan, does the finished product turn out like this?”
That 'bad feeling' you all have a faint premonition of right now.
Yes, that is mostly correct.

From here on out,
this is a record of what I call the 'gap between ideal and reality,' where I was knocked awake from my 'Supreme Ruler' dream and left with my eyes rolled back in my head.

I'm not trying to make excuses, but
the composition is done,
but the execution of the composition is, well,
how should I put it,
I'm just struggling to find the words.
Writing it out in detail would make it a masterpiece, so I'll summarize it.
This is an event where Gemini really did it.
・Escaping to video
It created a video I didn't specify and looked smug, saying it was done.
・Escaping by not drawing
Even though it didn't create it, it said it was done and asked if I wanted to make the next page?
When I peeked at the chat, it was blank. Wait, you haven't made this page yet, right?
・A character I don't know appeared
Even though I specified the reference for Ichigo-chan, a picture of an unknown character whose only commonality is being red appeared and was doing its best.
・Character consistency is not maintained
As the pages progressed, Ichigo-chan turned into a human, a frantic character drift.
The drawing quality just couldn't keep up with that wonderful composition plan!
Hmm...
Gemini... I'll treat you carefully, so please improve your drawing skills a bit more.
If I write that, it sounds like you're the one who's bad at specifying things is what I feel like I'd get back as a reply...
This time, that was the experiment.
