My Second Life: The Dangers of Assumptions and the Hot Water Bottle Incident
I am summarizing here at the start of the new year some events I had intended to write about at the end of the year but never got around to.
⸻
■ A Series of 'Assumption Errors'
One day, as the end of last year's work approached, I made a mistake at work.
I usually take care to double-check things to avoid 'assumptions and misunderstandings,' but when you are strongly convinced of something, you fail to notice mistakes even when you think you are reviewing them—
that was exactly the pattern.
Shortly after that, I had a chiropractic appointment scheduled.
I was convinced it was on a 'Friday,' but it was actually on a 'Thursday.'
I only realized it after they contacted me.
I want to be careful about booking errors because they cause trouble for the other party.
I was lucky that there was an opening the next day, but sometimes cancellation fees can apply.
Assumptions are truly scary, aren't they?
⸻
■ 'Small Misunderstandings' Lurking in Daily Life
・Even though I have designated spots for things in the house, I end up putting them somewhere else and then searching everywhere for them.
・I can't remember someone's name even though it's on the tip of my tongue.
Such things have definitely been increasing.
Assuming that I will forget—that is precisely why
'writing things down' and 'deciding where to put things'
I feel these two things are becoming increasingly important.
⸻
■ The Hot Water Bottle Incident
Two days before my trip, I had sukiyaki and beer with my daughter for the first time since returning home.
It was supposed to be a happy night with a full stomach and a happy heart...
The next morning, I noticed the bedding was wet.
When I checked in a panic, I found the hot water bottle cap had loosened and was leaking.
It was a disaster, with the sheets, mattress pad, and even the mattress itself soaked.
I remembered that I hadn't tightened the cap properly because I was drunk, and then I recalled touching the cap with my toes in the morning—
the 'cause was myself.'
I managed to sleep that night by running the hair dryer and heater at full blast, but it gave me quite a scare.
To those who use hot water bottles:
The warmth is wonderful, but please be careful about both burns and leaks.

■ Year-End Realizations and Mindset for This Year
It was a year-end where I felt a bit down due to a series of mistakes and assumptions. But precisely because I had this realization,
'Be careful especially when busy' and 'Thinking you have checked is not enough'
Without forgetting those lessons, I want to try to get things a bit more organized this year.
Thank you for reading until the end.
