Shiriuchi Onsen, the oldest hot spring in Hokkaido
Shiriuchi Onsen stands quietly in the southern part of Hokkaido.
It is said to have been opened about 800 years ago and is a famous hot spring known as the oldest in Hokkaido.
The water at Shiriuchi Onsen is broadly divided into
two types with different characteristics: 'Kami-no-yu' (upper bath) and 'Shimo-no-yu' (lower bath).

■ Spring Quality and Basic Data
Spring Quality: Sodium-Chloride/Bicarbonate Spring
Bath Temperature: Approx. 43.0°C
Both are free-flowing directly from the source.
The concentration and freshness of the components are evidenced by the mineral deposits left on the bathtubs and floors.
■ Kami-no-yu
It is called 'Kami-no-yu' because the source is located on a hill.
It is known for being good for the skin due to its strong alum and salt components.
The bathroom is not large, but the presence of the water is significant.
The temperature is a bit hot at about 43°C, providing a very satisfying soak.
It is said that you can add water to adjust the temperature if it is too hot.
Main Benefits
Soothing skin problems (itching, roughness)
Skin moisturizing
Exfoliation adjustment
■ Shimo-no-yu
Shimo-no-yu is characterized by a spring quality rich in iron.
Because the source is located close to the building, the water does not cool down easily before reaching the bathtub, and it is reputed to warm you to the core.
In addition to the indoor bath, you can also enjoy a mixed-gender open-air bath.
Please note that the open-air bath requires a reservation.
Main Benefits
Neuralgia, lower back pain, joint pain
Recovery from muscle fatigue
Blood circulation promotion
Improvement of sensitivity to cold

In addition to the hot springs, there is also a sauna called 'Kokyu no Ma' (Breathing Room).
Although I did not use it this time, it is a space designed with great attention to detail, setting it apart from typical saunas.

Shiriuchi Onsen is surrounded by mountains, and there is nothing much in the vicinity.
However, that is precisely the value of this hot spring.
Because there are no unnecessary distractions, you stay at the inn, soak in the water, and savor the food.
Just that time alone is surprisingly profound.
Shiriuchi Onsen is not a place for 'sightseeing,' but
a place to settle down and fully enjoy.
It only shows its true potential when the hot springs, food, and tranquility all come together.
