The Reality of Descriptive Mock Exams: Protecting Our Son's Heart Before Choosing a Target University

A renewed challenge for descriptive exam preparation and the resolve to face the validity of target universities
My son headed to the study room again today and steadily completed his study quota. In mathematics, in particular, he has progressed through 9 out of 20 sessions of the top-level 'Essence of Mathematics (Science Course)' and has cleared the confirmation tests. As his parent, I am truly amazed by his concentration and perseverance.
The looming deadline for deciding on a target university
However, with the 'National Public University Descriptive Mock Exam' coming up at the end of May, a sense of tension is running through our family. This mock exam follows the format of the secondary entrance exam, and his Toshin homeroom teacher has also advised him that he 'should narrow down his target university by June or July.' The time to assess not just his aspirations, but the feasibility of passing, is drawing closer by the second.
If he is confronted with the reality that Kyoto University School of Medicine or Osaka University School of Medicine is too difficult at this stage, the psychological damage to my son would be immeasurable. When I was talking about this with my wife, our son also began to feel anxious. Although he has poured all his energy into solidifying the basics, he has yet to touch upon actual past exam practice or descriptive techniques.
Finding a clue to descriptive exams with the 'World's Easiest to Understand' series
To dispel the anxiety that he cannot compete as he is, we decided to use his evening study time leading up to the mock exam to work on the 'World's Easiest to Understand Kyoto University Series.' The goal is to get an overview of mathematics, English, chemistry, and Japanese, and to grasp even a few tips for descriptive answers.
When we tried a similar approach before, he felt overwhelmed by the sheer volume and had to stop when he reached his mental limit. Applying that lesson, we plan to proceed little by little, keeping a close watch on his progress while prioritizing his mental well-being together with my wife.
Turning impatience into conviction
Solidifying the basics in his daily routine and tracing the outlines of secondary exam preparation at night. I hope this two-pronged approach will serve as a charm to help him overcome the great wall of the descriptive mock exam. No matter what the results are, we will continue to run alongside him as 'Team Family,' staying closest to his heart so that he can take his next step with conviction.
