例題 8.2.3
第二次大戦参戦に至るアメリカ世論の推移(我関せず⇒世論が割れる⇒一致団結)
When the World War of 1914 broke out in Europe, there was in America, at first, an almost universal agreement that the struggle was no business of the United States. Behind this lay the sentiment of isolationism and a desire for peace. But as the conflict developed, with America’s rights at sea in danger and imperialistic Germany pressing dangerously toward victory, the public, while still against taking up arms, began to divide into two camps: pro-German and pro-Ally groups. Concern for democratic Britain and France, however, came to prevail, and when the United States itself entered the struggle, the people were united as never before in a time of national danger.
