    Whether either the material or the intellectual changes in the past half century produced comparable changes in the American character is difficult to determine. The forces that create a national character are as obscure as those that create an individual character, but that both are formed early and change relatively little is almost certain. Those familiar with the English character know that Emerson's analysis of English Traits of the mid-nineteenth century is largely adequate a century later, while the persistence of certain traits in the French and the German characters has simplified the task of historians and complicated that of reformers. The American character, as delineated by Tocqueville, Bryce, and Brogan at half-century intervals, seems substantially the same: the differences are quantitative and material rather than qualitative and moral.
