The way people placed in extreme situations face absurdity in their own ways is piled up with restrained prose. It is said that Camus himself superimposed his experience under Nazi occupation onto this work, and the plague is clearly a metaphor for something. However, even without reading it that way, it is a novel that hits home as a story of a plague.
