Episode 15: The Station Deity of Akihabara Station
Electric Town, maid cafes, the latest gadgets, anime, and games—once you step off at Akihabara Station, all kinds of "likes" collide. The station deity who protects this chaotic town was fidgeting restlessly on the rafters again today.
As for their appearance, it was half maid outfit, half happi coat. A game controller in the right hand, a soldering iron in the left. According to the deity, it was "Akihabara-style formal wear," but it looked like a hodgepodge of cosplay to anyone else.
"Let's see... is today a PC parts sale day? Or an idol event? ...Oh, another tourist is lost!"
When the deity looked down, a foreign traveler was looking troubled in front of the ticket gate.
"Akihabara? Anime? Gundam?"
The deity frantically mashed the buttons on the controller. By chance, the staff at the tourist information center next to the gate caught the traveler's eye, and they were able to get directions immediately.
"Phew, nice button mashing! Special move: 'Someone will help'!"
On the platform, among the people waiting for the train, stood a student with a backpack stuffed full of PC parts. The bag was about to burst from the weight and looked like it was going to collapse onto the floor at any moment. The deity instinctively raised the soldering iron. Miraculously, the bag's strap held on, and the student let out a sigh of relief, saying, "Thank goodness..."
"Take that! I won't let anyone who comes here cry over mere parts!"
When noon arrived, the maids in front of the station began handing out flyers all at once. Tourists accepted them shyly, and salarymen put one in their pockets with a wry smile. The deity adjusted their maid hat and nodded with satisfaction, as if they were one of them.
"Distribution complete! Akihabara is peaceful again today!"
However, in the afternoon, trouble struck. A man trying to transfer from the Sobu Line to the Tsukuba Express got lost in the long corridor.
"Wait, where am I? Which way? This is already like an RPG dungeon!"
The deity hurriedly mashed the controller buttons. Just then, a group of middle school students passing by called out, "We're going to Tsukuba too, so let's go together!" The man thanked them with teary eyes and desperately followed behind the group.
"See? The labyrinth of Akihabara requires party play!"
In the evening, the restaurants inside the station were bustling with otaku and tourists. A line formed in front of the curry shop, and extra servings of noodles were flying off the shelves at the ramen shop. The deity's stomach growled, and they couldn't help but sit seiza-style on the rafters.
"...Even a deity wants to eat curry, you know."
As if answering that murmur, a customer from the line returned to the platform carrying the scent of curry. The aroma drifted through the air, and the faces of the commuters softened just a little.
At night, amidst the glittering neon of the Electric Town, the station deity looked up at the sky and took a deep breath. Today, too, people got lost, laughed, and headed home with their bags in tow.
"Yeah, Akihabara really is a town that looks best when everything is all mixed together."
The deity held the controller up high and said one last thing.
"Let's clear the next stage, too!"
