Writing my first paid note
Hello. I am @go_mitarai, a photographer based in Oita Prefecture, working across Kyushu.
Yesterday, I wrote my first paid note.
To be precise, I have changed past notes to paid content halfway through, but this is the first time I have published something as paid from the start.
Only one day has passed, but I would like to summarize what I have learned from this experience.
Honestly, I was hesitant
Honestly, I was hesitant about making it paid. Based on market principles, things that are in demand should be paid for appropriately, so I believe it is legitimate to write a valuable note, have it help someone, and receive compensation as a result. In fact, creating a system where I can continuously provide value to the people I want to reach by receiving money should be a wonderful thing.
However, at the same time, I understood that by making it paid, a certain number of people would dislike it. Even my younger, edgier self said similar things with a cynical attitude in the note below (I don't really want you to read it, haha).
If people leave because of that, then so be it, and I don't have time to worry about such people. Delivering content to the people I want to reach is more important to me, so while I say goodbye to those who dislike it, I can understand their perspective even if I cannot empathize with them, so honestly, I was just looking for the right balance in my communication.
In this note, I tried to find my own balance by making the review section entirely free and only charging for the RAW data.
Also, recently on Instagram, I held a project titled "RAW even if you let me develop it," where I received RAW data from everyone and developed it for free, as I was searching for the right distance and way to communicate and interact.
My current stance is to continue posting useful content as paid occasionally, and meaningful content for free on note.
Heartless words
That being said, I am navigating my communication in my own way, but I did end up seeing it. It wasn't said to me directly, but it was clearly about me, and even from a third-party perspective, it was obvious it was directed at me given the timing and content (thank you to everyone who saw that and sent me kind words).
Since it was someone I followed mutually, I was surprised, but I don't see the point in arguing on social media, so I quietly blocked them and ended it. I even think, thank you for giving me material to write about on note, but it is a fact that it didn't feel good.
Thanks to social media, I have met people I never would have met otherwise, and I enjoy those benefits more than I can say, but at the same time, it was a good opportunity to rethink how my own careless words and actions might be hurting someone in the same way.
I want to be someone who can keep a little bit of imagination.
I just remembered, the lyrics to the second verse of back number's "Suiheisen" (Horizon) are great, aren't they?
"Hidden within the cheers and applause is someone's scream."
You can learn from everyone
When I feel conflicted and have something to say, I believe it is important to express it as words with a certain amount of weight, and I am intentionally writing it down on note this time for that reason. I don't think for a second that I am right, and I'm sure I'll be saying something completely different next year, but I believe there is value in standing out and putting things into words.
Because of this incident, I was reminded of words my grandfather, who will soon be 100 years old, once told me.
"You can learn from everyone. Treasure that attitude."
