The Job of Waking Up #ThreeSentenceStory
I am participating in Haratokei-san's project!
“Gummiesare falling from the sky!”
It was exactly noon when my son told me this with excitement. I sat up from the sofa and looked out the window. Just as my son said, gummies of various colors—red, blue, and yellow—were falling from the sky onto the small town square, bouncing and scattering across the ground. It was as if a massive amount of gummies were about to cover everything up to the horizon
.
I thought vaguely that if you sliced a rainbow, this is the kind of rain that would fall.
“Did you do that, Dad!?”
My son asked with sparkling eyes, and I smiled and shook my head.
Even though we work at the same place, that is the job of the “Children’s Dream Division.”
Based on the concept of “giving dreams to children,” the government has a policy of granting “anything, just one thing” to children chosen by lottery. Even with the extreme decline in the birthrate, it is quite a bold policy.
“So it wasn’t you, Dad...”
I patted my son’s head as he looked out the window with disappointment, and I stood up. I told my wife I was heading to work.
“Oh? Was it today?”
My wife, who was cooking in the kitchen, turned to me with a surprised look.
“Yeah. This time it’s a torrential downpour of gummies.”
I put on my work clothes with a wry smile. Hearing that, my wife stopped cooking and came over to me.
“So, what do you think?”“...A child’s dream is coming true. There is nothing more wonderful than that.”“Good!”
She patted my shoulder, and my wife returned to her post.
I looked out the window again. Children were running around in the continuing gummy rain while holding
umbrellas
. It really felt like being inside a dream.
However, such a lovely dream would dry up by tomorrow and eventually rot. The world couldn’t function like that. Dreams must eventually be woken up from. The job of our “Dream Recovery Division” is to clean up children’s dreams neatly and return them to daily life. For the sake of those who will live in reality tomorrow as well. I opened the door vigorously and headed to the garage to start the engine of the giant cleaning vehicle.
