Nanigeni Bunshigeki 2024 Launch Commemorative Series #2 [Michi Ichiho]

Writers, Taking the Stage
Writers (authors) who make their way in the world with nothing but a pen, along with their friends, are gathering to put on a play.
While the Bunshigeki (writers' theater) has a history of over 130 years, this is the first launch performance in Osaka in a full 66 years. Since it's an amateur production, we might be desperate, flustered, and panicking, right?
……Such is the wonderful project, "Nanigeni Bunshigeki" (Casual Writers' Theater).
We will be publishing essays by the writers who will be taking the stage in order!!
The second installment is by Michi Ichiho.
Please enjoy!!

When I was invited to something called a Bunshigeki, I had absolutely no confidence in either the "writer" part or the "theater" part, but it sounded interesting, so I rashly replied, "I'll do it!" At the kickoff meeting last September, member after member volunteered, saying things like, "I'd like a role with as few lines as possible..." or "I'll be a tree..." and I felt nothing but kinship. Was the play "Yosaku," by any chance?

Shortly after that, I sprained my foot while trekking on a trip. Perhaps it should be called a blessing in disguise that it was the last day, so I wobbled home at a turtle's pace the next day, and spent a while living a life where I couldn't part with my support brace, compresses, and cane. Since it wasn't exactly excruciating pain, I managed without going to the hospital, but the discomfort persisted afterward, and I feel quite uneasy going down stairs unless I'm holding onto the handrail. It might be fear rather than discomfort.

When I met Makate Asai this February, I thoughtlessly let slip, "The sprain from last year just won't heal~," and she worried about me in a tone more serious than I expected, saying, "What are you going to do about the stage!" I'm a tree, after all...

And as of July, it still hasn't fully healed. I deeply felt that this is just the age I'm at. I can't return to the body I had before I messed it up.

About fifteen years ago, I broke a bone in my lower back and was hospitalized. It was my first time being hospitalized in my life, and for one month of that, I was mostly bedridden and unable to move. Shortly after being transported (or rather, admitted), I took out my earrings. I was worried that it might leave a bad impression to have earrings dangling in a life where I had to rely on nurses for everything. At that point, it had been about half a year since I'd pierced them, and I thought they had completely settled in.

However, when I was discharged two months later and happily tried to put my earrings back in, the skin on the back of my ears had closed up. I was half disappointed and half happy. The crushed bone was mending, and the needle holes were filling in. It was proof that my body had been working honestly and diligently while I was moping in bed.

If it were now, I'm sure they wouldn't close up. I think this while touching the remnants of the pierced holes that are slightly indented. Well, it can't be helped. I have no choice but to take on challenges with the weapons I have at the time. Whether it's acting or writing novels.

I'll try to do it while being as gentle as possible, so please work hard with me.
Let's enjoy this. To my body.
