Nanigeni Bunshigeki 2024 Launch Commemorative Series #6 [Taiyo Murasumi]
Writers, taking the stage
Writers (literary figures) who make their way in the world with nothing but a pen, along with their friends, gather to put on a play.
While the tradition of Bunshigeki (writers' theater) spans over 130 years, this is the first launch performance in Osaka in a full 66 years. Because it is an amateur production, perhaps they will be earnest, or perhaps they will be flustered and panicked?
……Such is the wonderful project, "Nanigeni Bunshigeki" (Casual Writers' Theater).
We will be publishing essays from those standing on stage in order!!
The sixth installment is from THE ROB CARLTON's captain, Taiyo Murasumi.
Please enjoy!!
What lies beyond
Text: Taiyo Murasumi
Until recently, these were days of fear.
I was appointed as the scriptwriter and director for the Nanigeni Bunshigeki "After School" (Original work: Keigo Higashino), a festival-like stage performance to be held for just one show on November 16th.
Bunshigeki refers to a play performed by writers.
Those standing on stage as actors are word magicians who skillfully manipulate writing and language.
Now, I would like you to recall my position for this project.
I am in charge of the script, you see.
Do you understand what this means?
That's right, it means the word magicians will be reading the script I have penned.
This is terrifying, isn't it? It sends a chill down my spine. Perfect for summer.
Moreover, the original work is Keigo Higashino's legendary debut novel.
The terror is doubled and doubled again.
Ha!
Bye, bye... does this mean goodbye to me?
The members of this Bunshigeki include not only writers but also editors and super-bookstore staff.
Can my script truly withstand these 16 total muscle-bound word magicians, the pros among pros?
The day it was distributed to everyone, I was so restless, let me tell you.
Once the script is finished, the next thing waiting is the table read.
All the performers read their lines aloud together.
What an event! Terror!
I usually find table reads terrifying, and I call that time "the hour of hell."
But this time, the terror was on a different level than ever before.
I tried to act like a composed director so as not to let my true feelings be known, but I kept glancing at everyone's faces during scenes I was worried about, I kept putting my mouth to an empty water bottle whenever I felt unsettled, and I gripped my Apple Pencil tightly during lines not in the original work—I was clearly nervous.
The moment the final stage direction was read and the table read came to a close with applause, I was truly relieved.
It was an interesting and very good table read.
Having overcome this, there is nothing left to fear.
Rehearse, welcome the opening day, and bring down the curtain.
Everything else is just fun.
Here we go, After School!
