Look Back Review: A Heart-Wrenching, Unforgettable Fragment of Youth
Good evening!
Today, I finally watched the movie "Look Back," which I've been looking forward to for so long!
I love Tatsuki Fujimoto's original work and have been dying to see it, so I'm glad I finally could.
But when I actually watched it, my heart felt tighter than I imagined, and I couldn't stop the tears...
I couldn't move for a while after it finished.
It's like the original work came to life!
First of all, the visuals were truly magnificent.
It's amazing how it maintains the monochrome atmosphere of the original while still standing perfectly as a "movie"!
It felt as if the worlds of Fujino and Kyomoto were truly breathing.
The beauty of the art is a given, but the sound effects and music placement were exquisite, especially the scratching sound of the pencils...! The moment I heard that, I thought, "Wow... I love this...!" (laughs).
The time they spent together, the distance between them
The relationship between Fujino and Kyomoto is just so precious and painful, it made my chest ache.
At first, it was a one-sided sense of rivalry, but before I knew it, Kyomoto had become a special presence for Fujino...
There were so many unspoken emotions between the two, and the way they couldn't quite convey them and ended up drifting apart felt so real that it made me cry.
Also, the direction unique to the film conveys Fujino's inner feelings even more deeply.
The scene where she visits Kyomoto's room, the atmosphere in that moment when the door opens quietly... I just couldn't handle it.
I almost started sobbing and tried my best to hold it back (though I think I cried a little anyway).
What lies beyond the "what ifs"
"Look Back" isn't just a youth story; it's also a tale of loss and rebirth. The scene where Fujino keeps thinking, "What if I had done this back then?" was heart-wrenching. I think everyone has moments where they wonder, "What if I had done that back then?" But watching the movie, I felt like I was being gently pushed forward, told that "you have no choice but to keep moving forward."
The lingering feeling after watching it is incredible
After the movie ended, I was dazed for a while. It was a strange sensation, like there was a hole in my heart, yet something warm remained. The impact of reading the original was huge, but the addition of expressions unique to the film made the story resonate even more deeply.
This is a work I want you to see. And it's a movie that makes you want to talk about it with someone after watching. I think I might go see it again...
Thank you for reading until the end! If anyone else has seen it, please let me know what you thought!
