Angels do not descend to the dance floor. — Blue Six, "Aquarian Angel"
New York, 2006.
After the release of his previous work, "Beautiful Tomorrow," Jay Denes produced solo albums for Aya and Lisa Shaw, respectively. After those two intense collaborations, he was finally ready to write the next Blue Six cycle.
He composed each song with a specific vocalist in mind.
Released on March 13, 2007, by Naked Music Records.
Blue Six as a project
Jay Denes is a co-founder of Naked Music and a musician/producer based in New York.
In his childhood, he loved Santana, the Beatles, and Joni Mitchell, eventually finding his way to Miles Davis and Coltrane, and then Roxy Music and Talking Heads—this omnivorous musical history created the diversity of the Blue Six sound.
Naked Music is known for deep house and downtempo, and has handled high-profile remixes for Sade, Kelis, and Maxwell.
The album "Aquarian Angel"
Released March 13, 2007. Naked Music Recordings (NMN 19). 12 tracks total.
Produced and composed by Jay Denes. Vocals by Aya, Lisa Shaw, and Catherine Russell. A work that fuses Brazilian beats, ambient backgrounds, and jazz elements with R&B-style vocals. All songs composed by Jay Denes.
—Angels do not descend to the dance floor.
It begins with "Tropicalia," but the house beat never arrives. Instead, the atmosphere shifts. Aya's voice drifts like an urban lullaby on the title track,
while "Half Light" strips away almost all percussion, letting the music simply float there.
The saxophone on "I’ve Given Enough" evokes the shadows of Chet Baker, and "A Woman of the World" flows away smoothly.
Denes described it as a "moody and introspective record," stating, "It is very difficult to create a delicate tapestry of music that doesn't get in the way of the vocals." This album is too quiet to be called house music. But that is exactly what makes it good.
What kind of night should you listen to this on?
In a room after someone has left.
When a glass is still left on the table and only the music continues. During those times.
Aya's voice does not ask questions, and Lisa Shaw's voice does not offer comfort—they are simply there. There is a reason it is called "deep" house. You are drawn back again and again to songs you don't immediately understand.
Angels do not descend to the dance floor.
They only come to quiet rooms.
