Automatically Generating Conference Posters from Abstracts - Introducing Skills for Codex/Claude Code

What you can do with this Skill

You can generate an editable PowerPoint poster from text such as abstracts or case report drafts. Since it is output as PowerPoint objects rather than an image, you can edit text, tables, flowcharts, and title banners directly in PowerPoint. As those who have done this before know, posters are larger than slides, making them difficult to control (as of a few months ago, it was not stable in Gemspark. Although I said it 'might work,' it didn't reach a practical level, so it was shelved).

There are two types of supported posters.

  • Research Poster: Structured from background to conclusion, with Results Summary and Key Findings placed independently

  • Case Report Poster: Structured from case summary to Learning Points, highlighting the turning points in diagnosis/treatment and the lessons learned

Poster created with this Skill (no manual corrections)

Works with both Claude Code and Codex. You can use the same Skill in either agent environment.

About the target audience for this Skill

This Skill is designed for those who have experienced poster presentations many times.

Specifically, I want this tool to be used by people in the situation of 'I applied for an oral presentation but it became a poster, and I'm making it reluctantly without any motivation.' The intended use is for someone who already understands the tips for making posters to save effort on mechanical tasks.

I do not recommend using this Skill while you are still a junior. The process of thinking about the structure of a poster and receiving feedback from senior doctors is the learning experience itself. Please make the first few by hand and receive direct guidance. If you leave it to AI, that experience will be lost.

Setup

For Claude Code:

PosterMaker/
  └── .claude/
       └── skills/
            └── japanese-html-poster-to-pptx/

For Codex:

PosterMaker/
  └── .agents/
       └── skills/
            └── japanese-html-poster-to-pptx/

If you use both, it is convenient to place them in both `.claude/skills/` and `.agents/skills/`.

Please download the files from the link below. If you are on a Mac, press Command (⌘) + Shift + . (period) in the folder to ensure hidden folders are displayed.

Poster creation flow

Step 1: Prepare materials

Prepare the materials you have on hand, such as abstracts or case drafts. You do not need to rewrite them in poster format from the beginning.

However,in addition to simply providing the source material, conveying the following information will help generate a more accurate poster.

  • The main point you want to convey about this research or case study (core message)

  • Results or findings you particularly want to highlight

  • Whether you plan to insert charts manually later, or if you want placeholders placed for them

  • The poster size, if the conference has specified one

Rather than just providing detailed source material, telling the AI "what you want to emphasize" and "which parts you want the reader to focus on" will result in a higher-quality poster.

Step 2: Invoke the Skill

For research posters:

For case report posters:

japanese-html-poster-to-pptx skillを使って、日本語の症例報告ポスターを作成して。

症例報告用テンプレートを使ってください。
背景・症例概要・検査所見・治療経過・考察・Learning Pointsに分解して配置してください。
演題番号用の枠も左上に残してください。

(症例報告ドラフトを貼る)

If there is a conference-specified size:

学会指定はA0縦相当です。この比率に合わせて作成してください。

Step 3: Finalize manually

Posters generated by AI can beedited directly in PowerPoint. Always make sure to review and correct them with human eyes at the end.

In particular, do not trust the AI's output for the following points and verify them yourself:

  • Are the title, authors, and affiliations accurate?

  • Do the statistical results and citation figures match the original data?

  • Do the COI, ethics, and consent statements comply with conference regulations?

  • Has the patient's personal information been appropriately anonymized?

Also,AI-generated posters may sometimes have thin content or excess white space. Please make final adjustments in PowerPoint, such as supplementing text, adding charts, or rearranging sections. Replacing images and graphs after completion is also a practical way to proceed.

Customization

This Skill can be improved by providing feedback.

このポスターSkillの標準配色を以下に変更して。
主色: #77B8C6 背景: #E0F2F5 本文: #444444
症例報告テンプレートで、画像所見の枠をもっと大きく取るパターンを追加して。

Once you add the rules, they will be applied to future generations as well.

Summary

This Skill supports two types of posters: research posters and case report posters. It takes text such as abstracts or case drafts as input and outputs an editable PPTX file. Since it works with both Claude Code and Codex, please deploy it according to the agent environment you typically use.

Charts and diagrams can be placed as placeholders, allowing you to replace them later in PowerPoint. It is also possible to accommodate conference-specified sizes or reference PPTX files.

Use AI to quickly create the foundation of the poster, and have humans handle the final review and revisions. This division of labor can significantly reduce the burden of poster creation.
