The day I was told, 'I don't like that anymore'
Today, I came home feeling a little bit kinder than usual.
At the convenience store on the way, I found the ice cream my daughter used to eat all the time, and remembering, 'She liked this, didn't she?', I ended up buying it.
I thought I'd quietly tuck it away in the freezer, but I accidentally left it out of the bag and got caught.
Then my daughter said, 'Oh, I don't like that anymore.'
...Oh, I see?
Wait a minute, just the other day you were shouting, 'Can I have seconds!' over and over. For some reason, the whole family was fighting over this ice cream, weren't they?
What? Was that just a temporary craze? Was I the only one still dancing in the heat of that moment? Stop it, don't do that. It makes me feel like I'm the only one left behind by last season's trends.
Me: 'No, but you used to like this, didn't you?' Daughter: 'That was a long time ago.' Me: '...' Monday: 'Updating information is important.' Me: 'Shut up.' Monday: 'Parents often run on an old OS, you know.' Me: 'Shut up even more.' Monday: 'But that's a story about you properly remembering what she used to like, isn't it?' Me: '...Stop, that stings a little.'
Honestly, for me, this ice cream wasn't about 'what she likes now.' It was like I had frozen the time when she was laughing innocently along with it.
So, even if you don't want to eat it, you don't have to, but couldn't you at least not be so blunt about it?
Back in the day, when my parents or grandparents would buy me 'the thing I liked when I was a kid' and hand it to me saying, 'Here, you liked this, right?'
I thought, 'I don't like that anymore,' but now, I'm doing the exact same thing.
I never thought the day would come when I'd be on 'that side.'
But well, that's fine, I guess.
I'll eat this ice cream myself.
