A World Invisible to Right-Handers
I went to the dentist the other day.
During the treatment, the moment I reached for the cup to rinse my mouth,
"Ah, this is also designed for right-handers."
I realized once again.
The cup is always set on the right side.
After all, if you don't return it to its fixed position on the right, the water won't come out automatically (laughs).
I am left-handed.
The world is made for right-handers more than you might think.
For right-handed people, it's taken for granted, so you might not be very conscious of it.
But for left-handers, there is a small sense of discomfort every day.
For example,
The arrangement of a set meal.
The handle of a teapot.
The wood carving knives I used when I was in elementary school.
The horizontal text printed on chopstick sleeves.
The orientation of the bill compartment in a bifold wallet.
The cash register I used every day when I worked in sales.
The numeric keypad on a computer keyboard.
Even the office phone has the receiver on the left side.
Right-handed people hold the receiver with their left hand and write notes with their right hand.
But since I am the opposite,
"I guess this is also designed for right-handers."
I think to myself while using it.
I also like sewing, and I often use a sewing machine.
Of course, this is also designed for right-handers.
But strangely enough, I never have any trouble.
Left-handed people have lived in a world designed for right-handers since they were small, so even if it feels strange, they naturally learn to adapt.
That's why now, even when I notice something is designed for right-handers,
"Here we go again (lol)"
is about all I think.
However, I do have one habit.
It's when I'm creating something from scratch.
For example, suppose I draw a picture of a fish.
🐟
Is it natural for the head to face right?
Or should it face left?
"Will this look strange to a right-handed person?"
I find myself stopping to think about it for a moment.
Even though there's no right answer...
I wonder if this is a common left-handed experience,
Or maybe it's just me (laughs).
But lately, I've been thinking.
Honestly, I wish all fish would just become cutlassfish.
