The Legend of the Tokugawa Buried Treasure: Romance, Dream, or Truth?
Thank you for your continued support.
Today, I will be writing an article that summarizes the facts and several theories regarding the "Tokugawa Buried Treasure Legend."
1. Introduction
I cannot recall exactly when I watched it, but a certain television program left a lasting impression on me.
It was a project that involved using heavy machinery to excavate a vast area on a grand scale.
The way they pursued it in earnest was captivating. I found myself drawn into the dust on the screen and the tremors caused by the heavy machinery.
I couldn't help but watch intently.🤔
They were seriously pursuing the "Tokugawa Buried Treasure," which seems like something out of a dream. I would like to delve into the mystery of this grand legend once again.
2. What is the Tokugawa Buried Treasure Legend?
This is a theory that suggests there is a vast treasure that was secretly hidden by the last shogun, Tokugawa Yoshinobu, and senior shogunate officials to prevent it from being confiscated by the new government army when the Edo Shogunate collapsed.
The amount is said to range from several billion to tens of billions of yen, or even on the scale of trillions.
During the chaotic period at the end of the Edo era, Japan was moving large sums of money for foreign trade and suppressing civil unrest, which led to speculation that a portion of it had been hidden somewhere.
3. Various Theories: The Phantom Hiding Places
Where exactly was this massive treasure hidden?
Various theories have been proposed.
■ Nikko Toshogu Shrine Theory
As this is the sacred place where Tokugawa Ieyasu is enshrined and security was tight, it is considered the most plausible hiding place for the buried treasure.
■ Mt. Akagi Theory
It is believed that it was suitable for hiding in the mountains where transportation was difficult.
In addition, many other candidate sites have been mentioned, such as the underground of Edo Castle and Mt. Haruna, but to this day,no definitive evidence has been found.
4. Why has it not been discovered?
So far, many people have pursued the buried treasure, and large-scale explorations have been conducted all over the country.
The project I saw on TV was one of them.
However, there have been no reliable reports of it being discovered to this day.
The reason for this is, above all,the fact that there are almost no clues.
There are few historical documents in the legend that can pinpoint a specific location, and the current situation is that one has no choice but to search blindly over a vast area.
Also, there is a strong view that the shogunate's finances were tight to begin with, so perhaps there was no treasure worth hiding.
Or, even if it was hidden, there is a persistent opinion that it may have already been taken away.
5. Conclusion
In the end, no one knows whether the Tokugawa Buried Treasure truly exists or not.😰
However, I think that might be fine as it is.(Though this is just my personal opinion...)
I felt that whether or not the physical treasure is found is not the essence of this legend.
I interpreted that the reason this legend continues to fascinate people is because it is a romance that unravels the mysteries of history, and an adventure story that one dreams of at least once.
The Tokugawa Buried Treasure legend has given me the opportunity to use my imagination and reflect on the past era.😊
Thank you for reading until the end🙏
