The Theory of Humans as Earth's Cells: Thinking About the Meaning of Your Existence Through Gaia Theory
Humans might be the "soul" of the Earth—the intersection of Gaia theory and the ego
Even though our cells are replaced every day, we continue to think "I am me." As mentioned in the previous article, that is because of “reaction patterns” and “continuity of the ego”.
But couldn't this structure be happening on a much larger scale?
For example, what if the "Earth" itself is maintaining its own "existence" just like we do?
What is Gaia theory?
The Gaia Hypothesis is a theory that the entire Earth behaves like a single living organism. It was proposed by scientist James Lovelock in the 1970s.
The massive system that is Earth uses oceans, air, microorganisms, humans, weather, and flora and fauna to perform "self-regulation."
For example, water falls as rain, becomes rivers, flows into the ocean, and returns as clouds after evaporating. Plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, while humans inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide. These cycles occur throughout the entire Earth, much like metabolism and respiration within a body.
It is the perspective that, just like a human maintaining body temperature, the Earth is constantly balancing itself to "keep itself alive."
Humans: Earth's cells or a virus?
Let's apply this theory to us humans.
We are like "cells" within the massive body that is Earth. But looking at our recent behavior, it doesn't really feel like we are "normal cells."
Mass consumption of resources, environmental destruction, population explosion.
If anything, we are closer to cancer cells or a virus.
But what if even this is an "intended effect" of the Earth?
For example—
Human destructive activities act as a trigger for Earth's metabolism
The development of civilization accelerates the "conscious evolution" of the entire Earth
It is "designed" so that a self-purification process occurs at a certain stage
I even start to feel that possibility.
What if the Earth also has an "ego"?
A human ego is a "collection of reaction patterns" of countless cells and memories.
Then, what if the Earth's ego is also...
countless life forms (humans, animals, plants)
atmosphere, water, climate, and fungi
a collection of reaction patterns woven together by these things?
And perhaps we humans are "part of that ego."
As an individual, you might seem like a tiny existence. But just as a single cell can influence the condition of the entire human body, our "thoughts" and "actions" might also be influencing the future of the Earth.
A Proposal as a Thought Experiment
This story is neither occult nor spiritual. It is simply a thought experiment.
However, by thinking about it this way,
why do we exist?
where does "self" end?
what is our relationship with the Earth?
such questions begin to arise.
In Conclusion
Just as the human soul is the core of ego and reaction, perhaps the Earth also has something like a "soul."
If each one of us is a "fragment of that soul," then perhaps even a single action today has some kind of meaning.
