5○ goén 'An Afternoon of Synchronicity' No.94
The whereabouts of invisible sounds dwelling in the body
A photoshoot with contemporary dancer, mica.
I had only one request.
That was for her to wear a plain black dress.
She brought a piece of music with her.
The moment the play button was pressed, I felt the air in the room change slightly.
I believe she was dancing. But to me, it didn't look like 'choreography'.

It didn't seem like the sound reached her ears, traveled to her brain, and moved her body;
it looked as if the sound itself had entered deep into her cells,
borrowing her bones and muscles to manifest itself.
Perhaps that is why.
Rather than the moments of intense movement, the fleeting instants where she suddenly stood still spoke even more powerfully.
Her body was still, yet the expression continued to move. It was such a mysterious time.

I don't give instructions. I simply watch what flows through the space,
and press the shutter the moment my heart reacts.
She translates the sound into her body, and I translate that presence into a photograph.
Looking back, that day's shoot was perhaps less about creating a work,
and more like a small resonance we had arranged somewhere.
Whether this is what is called synchronicity,
I still don't really know.
The only thing I am certain of is that although I was the one taking the photos that day, I was also being guided by something.
