The Day I Got Angry at ChatGPT | How Writing with AI Resulted in 'Generic Text' [A Beginner's Guide]

To those who felt embarrassed by the text AI wrote for them

"This isn't the writing I would produce..."

Have you ever thought that when you had ChatGPT write an article for you?

I have.
And more than once.

I started using AI so I could write articles even on days when I wasn't feeling well.
I had high hopes. I thought, "This will make things easier."

But what appeared on the screen was—

Stiff, distant, and generic text that I'd seen somewhere before.

Words without warmth, as if "anyone could have written them."

I wanted to convey my own unique experience, but
it had been converted into common, easily digestible expressions that could apply to anyone.

"This isn't it."

Even as I thought that, I didn't have the energy to write it myself.
In the end, there were times I published it anyway, even though it felt incomplete.

If you feel the same way—

It's not your fault.

You were just using AI the wrong way.

The story of the day I got "angry" at AI

One day, I asked ChatGPT to do this:

"Write an article about my experience of being unable to work due to depression."

The text that came back was something like this:

"Even in difficult situations, it is important not to give up. By moving forward one step at a time, a path will surely open up. There are things you can do, too. Why not start today?"

The moment I read it, I was horrified.

This is just a hard sell.

That wasn't the positive message I wanted to convey.

“I couldn't work, I was scared, but I couldn't tell anyone.”
Those were the messy, raw emotions I had.

AI cleans things up too much.
It turns pain into hope.

That day, I said to the screen:

“This is a bit too much.”

And then, I rewrote it myself.

Why does AI spit out 'embarrassing text'?

There are three main reasons why text written by AI feels 'off'.

1. Experiences become abstract

AI turns specific episodes into generalities.

For example—

What you wanted to write:
“I woke up in the morning, couldn't get out of bed, and three hours passed while I stared at my phone.”

The text AI converted it to:
“Due to poor physical condition, there were times when my daily life was hindered.”

…That's not it.
What the reader wants to know isn't the 'hindrance,' but 'what you were thinking about for those three hours in bed.'

2. It's stiff and lacks interest

AI tries to write 'correctly and politely'.

But what's needed on note isn't 'correctness'.
It's 'your uniqueness'.is.

Articles written in stiff language are tiring to read.
Especially for people whose hearts are feeling weak.

3. It becomes 'text anyone can write'

AI generates average text based on its training data.

In other words—
your unique story turns into a story anyone could have.

That won't reach the reader's heart.

How do you balance using AI and yourself?

So, should you not use AI at all?

That is not the case.

I still rely on AI even now.
I've become able to create articles even on days when I'm not feeling well.

The important thing is—
not to 'leave everything to AI'.

This is how I distinguish between the two.

Things to leave to AI (structure and framework)

  • Having it think about the flow of the article

  • Having it create the chapter structure

  • Having it simplify difficult words

→ Even if my thinking stops, I can create a form

Things to do yourself (warmth and words)

  • Writing specific episodes

  • Keep your raw emotions intact

  • Choose words that speak to the reader

→ The parts only you can write

Before and After: How a Little Effort Makes a Difference

For example, it looks like this.

Before (Leaving it entirely to AI)

After resigning due to depression, I looked for new sources of income. I tried various methods, but due to fluctuations in my health, I couldn't keep them up. However, by continuing to try without giving up, I was able to earn income on note.

After (Adding my own touch)

Three years ago, I quit my job due to depression.
I had injury and sickness benefits and severance pay, so I wasn't in immediate trouble.
But what didn't go away was the anxiety that 'I might never be able to work again.'
Even looking at my bank book, it seemed like I still had plenty.
But I felt uneasy somewhere.
I always had this feeling that my money was slowly disappearing.

Do you see what's different?

In the After version, there is 'me'.
There are specific emotions, breathing, and warmth.

Just by that, the reader feels, 'This person has really experienced this.'

Using AI saves time. It increases efficiency.

But please don't forget.

AI is not you.

Your story can only be written by you.

Publishing text created by AI as-is—
means letting go of the 'you-ness' that makes it special.

So, please make sure to add your own touch at the end.

  • If you think, 'This doesn't sound like me,' rewrite it

  • Add specific episodes in your own words

  • Make stiff expressions softer and more conversational

That alone will bring your writing back to life.

For those who want to know more

Thank you for reading this far.

If you feel like, "I kind of understand how to deal with AI now,"
I would be happy.

But you might be thinking this:

"How exactly should I use it differently?"
"I want to know the prompts you actually use."

I was fumbling in the dark at first, too.
I failed many times, got angry at the AI, but kept trying through trial and error without giving up.

The method I found—
"Have the AI create the framework, and add the warmth yourself"

I have summarized this in another article.

👉 [Over 5 copies sold] The full record of my 3-month rehabilitation side hustle that I started from bed with AI, going from "0 yen to 2,500 yen" while unable to work after resigning due to depression

In this article—

  • The AI prompts I actually use (ChatGPT/Claude)

  • The "2-step writing method" that lets you create articles even when your thoughts stop

  • Tips I used to keep going even when my health fluctuated

I have published these in a copy-pasteable format.

"I want to use AI, but it doesn't feel right."
"I want to write my own style of text more easily."

If you feel that way, this will surely be useful to you.

Finally

AI is convenient.
But it is not magic.

It cannot tell your story for you.

AI is ultimately just a 'partner'.

It helps you think of a structure,
polishes your words,
and helps you give shape to your thoughts even on days when you feel stuck.

But in the end, you are the one who breathes life into it.

Please cherish the words that only you can write.

That is what makes writing reach someone's heart.

Thank you for reading this far.

Let's move forward together, one step at a time.

I am rooting for you.
