[I want my child to read books!] 3 tips for raising a child who loves to read
"My child doesn't really read books..."
There are quite a few parents who worry about this.
How can you make a child who doesn't read love reading?
I will share the methods based on my own experience.
If you want to raise a child with a rich imagination, or help them acquire reading comprehension skills to improve their academic performance,
then this is a must-read for you!
I want my child to read books! 3 tips for raising a child who loves to read
1. Leave books borrowed from the library at home

If you don't have time to go to the library with your child, or if they don't want to go, borrow five or six books that your child might read or like and leave them at home.
Of course, there will be books they don't read, and that's fine.
If you force them, reading will become painful or they will develop a negative image of it.
Leave it entirely up to your child whether they read them or not.
2. Do not reject the books your child chooses

What would you do if your child chose a book for children younger than their age?
A five-year-old reading a baby book, or an elementary school student choosing a book for toddlers.
Actually, this happens quite often.
And what usually happens is,
"This is a book for little kids."
We end up saying that.
I understand how you feel.
As a parent, you think, "Is this okay?"
right? 💦
But, try to put yourself in the shoes of the child who was told that.
From the child's perspective, it has nothing to do with the pictures being childish or the target age. They are reading it because it looks interesting, or perhaps it feels nostalgic.
In other words, their curiosity is being piqued.
"I want to nurture my child's curiosity."
If you are that kind of parent, this is the perfect opportunity!
When a child is absorbed in something, it's best not to interrupt them and let them continue.
Of course, you must stop them if it's dangerous or prohibited.
Other than that,if parents can just be broad-minded and watch over them, the child's curiosity will grow rapidly.
3. Help them acquire speed reading

I am a speed reading instructor, but actually, my daughter started speed reading first.
She didn't dislike books to begin with, so when I asked my daughter, who was in 4th grade at the time,
"Do you want to be able to read books faster?"
she said,
"I do!"
so we spent an hour commuting from Saitama to Shibuya to attend a speed reading class.
After mastering speed reading, her volume of reading increased rapidly, and by the time she was in 6th grade, she was reading many novels, including those by Kenji Miyazawa, "The Restaurant of Many Orders," "I Want to Eat Your Pancreas," and Keigo Higashino's books that my husband borrowed from the library.
As a result, she gained reading comprehension skills, which led to an improvement in her Japanese language grades (she always gets around 90 points in Japanese).
What is the only thing a parent can do for their child?
What I have talked about so far is actually about my older child.
I have another child, and of course, I raised her the same way.
When she was in preschool, she enthusiastically read Osamu Tezuka's Black Jack manga and was interested in insects, mazes, and books about yokai that were a bit off-putting (lol).
And now that she is in 6th grade, her hobby is cooking.
Like this, even sisters are completely different.
Of course, it's fine for parents to have ideals, but what they do is up to the individual.
Even if you do everything you can,if the child shows no interest, it's better to gracefully give up and let them do what they like, as the child's abilities will bloom much more.
Environment is important for whether you come to love or hate reading.
However, by watching over and supporting what the child shows interest in,a sense of self-affirmation that they are loved for who they are is nurtured.
And this is the only thing I can do for my children as a parent, and it is the most important thing for their future.
