Is 'Net Positive' the Key to Business Growth?! A New Metric to Transform the Future of Companies!

Hello! This is the Fujitsu PR note editorial department.
On February 26, 2025, Fujitsu released the "Net Positive Index Research Report." It might sound like a difficult name, but it is actually a very important metric for balancing business growth with social contribution!
The press release is here
In this article, I would like to talk about this report from a unique perspective, only possible on note.

How to survive in an unpredictable era

Geopolitical tensions, cyberattacks, extreme weather... Risks surrounding companies are becoming more complex, and it is becoming common for them to cause disruptions to businesses and supply chains. In such an era, how can companies maintain resilience and profitability while having a positive impact on society and the environment?
One answer to that is the "Net Positive" approach.

What is "Net Positive"?

Simply put, it means having a positive impact on the environment and society through business activities. The point is that it goes a step further than the conventional idea of "reducing environmental impact" and focuses on "having a positive impact."

The "Net Positive Index," jointly developed by Fujitsu and Economist Impact* in the UK, is a metric that visualizes how companies are progressing toward achieving net positive. We have surveyed and analyzed the progress across five industries.

*Economist Impact: The research business of The Economist Group in the UK, which leverages its comprehensive research and analytical capabilities and its vast accumulation of market and industry data.

Current status and challenges of companies revealed by the survey results

What became clear in this survey is the current situation where many companies have not yet started working on net positive. On the other hand, there are companies that are already realizing the benefits of net positive. They cite benefits such as cost reduction, mitigation of climate change risks, and strengthening of compliance.
So, why are so many companies unable to take the step toward net positive initiatives? The main reason is the misunderstanding that it is difficult to balance sustainability initiatives with financial goals. However, in reality, the results show that companies advancing net positive are not inferior to other companies in terms of profit and sales, and are actually in a superior position in terms of trust from investors.

What is the key to net positive success?!

Fujitsu itself also aims to become a technology company that realizes net positive through digital services by 2030. To achieve this goal, we will accelerate sustainability activities in a data-driven manner and contribute to the realization of sustainability for society as a whole by providing services that utilize digital technology to our customers.

We are also utilizing the evaluation tool announced this time ourselves. While the average score of the survey was 55/100 points, Fujitsu's score was 83 points, which was evaluated as the "advanced phase," but we recognize that there is still room for improvement.

In addition, the survey results showed that data utilization is essential for net positive success. First, it is important to collect and analyze data to accurately grasp the current situation and identify where the issues and gaps are. Next, it is important to determine which areas can produce the greatest effect. By visualizing data, it becomes possible to set clear goals focused on people and track their progress.

Furthermore, more than 75% of companies in all industries answered that "data collection contributes to the promotion of net positive," showing that the use of data influences a company's competitiveness. Among them, the retail industry by sector and European companies by region achieved high scores, and about one in three companies surveyed answered that "data was very useful" in reducing negative impacts on society and the environment.

Making "Net Positive" more accessible

This time, behind the scenes of creating the report, we interviewed people in charge at various companies. We found that although many companies wish to realize a net positive society, they are troubled by "not knowing what to do specifically."

That is why Fujitsu, in cooperation with Economist Impact, created this report and a free-to-use for anyoneevaluation tool. By answering a few questions, it is designed so that you can grasp your company's position and issues by industry and region based on this survey data, and connect it to concrete actions.

Toward a bright future with Net Positive x "Fujitsu Uvance"

Net positive cannot be achieved by a single company alone. It is important for companies, individuals, and society as a whole to work together. This concept is also shared by 'Fujitsu Uvance,' a business model that aims to solve social issues through cross-industry collaboration that transcends sectors and corporate boundaries.
If we can extract the future direction and challenges for our customers through assessments using this evaluation tool, we believe we can provide 'Fujitsu Uvance' offerings aligned with those findings or provide feedback for the development of new offerings, thereby enabling us to propose solutions that address both customer and societal challenges even more effectively.
Fujitsu held an online press conference on the same day, where the following four speakers explained this initiative.
