Flowers of Vitex agnus-castus in front of Nijo Castle: June 24, 2026 (Wed)
[Abstract]
On June 24, 2026, I observed flowering specimens of Vitex agnus-castus L. planted along Higashiborikawa-dori in front of Nijo Castle, Kyoto. Using past observations at the Kyoto Botanical Garden as a reference axis, this record is an attempt to interpret specimens of the same species placed outside the botanical garden as an extension of 'exhibited natural history.' I describe the forms, temporal structures, and management intentions with which this species appears in the urban managed space of a street, and examine how the conceptual framework of the institutional space of a botanical garden can be extended outside its grounds.

On the afternoon of June 24, 2026, under a cloudy sky, I observed flowering specimens of Vitex agnus-castus along Higashiborikawa-dori in front of Nijo Castle, Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto. Although this location is outside the managed area of the Kyoto Botanical Garden, the streetscape is formed through planned planting and continuous pruning management, placing it within the institutional framework of urban greening policy. In that sense, while it belongs to a different institution than a botanical garden, it is continuous with botanical garden practices in terms of 'selecting, placing, and maintaining' plants.
The observed specimens were trained into shrub-to-small-tree forms, with numerous inflorescences formed at the tips of the branches. The flowers are pale purple to wisteria-purple, featuring bilabiate corollas and stamens that clearly protrude from the corolla. The inflorescences are not single upright spikes but branch into conical shapes with lateral branches, creating a cloud-like volume overall. This structure is consistent with the typical inflorescence morphology described for Vitex agnus-castus. The leaves are opposite and form palmately compound leaves. The leaflets are generally five, sometimes seven, narrowly lanceolate with nearly entire margins, and a grayish-white tomentum was observed on the undersides of the leaves. These morphological characteristics, while including horticultural individual variation, are consistent with the taxonomic description of this species.
What is noteworthy about this street planting is that the natural history characteristics of this species are not presented as a reproduction of an ecological environment, but are extracted as 'identifiable forms.' The flowering period is concentrated from June to August, and in other seasons, only the leaf appearance and branch structure remain. This temporal structure is very similar to how exhibition time is handled in a botanical garden. That is, the entire life history of the plant is not presented continuously; rather, the point in time with the highest visual and informational density is selectively foregrounded.
Traces of management are also an important subject of observation. The extension of branches was controlled at a certain height, and interference with pedestrian traffic was suppressed. This pruning is management based on the nature of this species, which forms inflorescences on current-year shoots, and can be interpreted as an operation based on horticultural knowledge. Here, these specimens exist not merely as landscape elements, but as 'plants maintained based on knowledge.' In this respect, street planting is positioned at the outer edge of botanical garden practice.

This record does not provide a conclusion. When fruits are formed in the autumn, or when the leaves fall in the winter, these specimens will allow for different readings of time. The gaze that travels back and forth between the inside and outside of the botanical garden is carried over to the next observation. That incompleteness is the positioning of this record.

Abstract
On June 24, 2026, I observed a flowering individual of Vitex agnus‑castus L. planted along Higashi‑Horikawa Street in front of Nijō Castle, Kyoto City. This record takes previous observations conducted at the Kyoto Botanical Gardens as a point of reference, while attempting to read an individual of the same species located outside the botanical garden as an extension of “displayed natural history.” By describing how this species appears—through its morphology, temporal structure, and management intentions—within a street setting as an urban management space, this study examines how the conceptual framework of the botanical garden as an institutional space can be extended beyond its physical boundaries.

On June 24, 2026, in the afternoon, under cloudy conditions, I observed a flowering individual of Vitex agnus‑castus along Higashi‑Horikawa Street in front of Nijō Castle, Nakagyō Ward, Kyoto City. Although this site lies outside the administrative boundary of the Kyoto Botanical Gardens, the streetscape is shaped through planned planting and continuous pruning management, and thus constitutes a space governed by the institutional framework of urban greening policy. In this sense, while belonging to a different institutional system from the botanical garden, the site remains continuous with botanical‑garden practice in its acts of selecting, arranging, and maintaining plants.
The observed individual had been trained into the form of a shrub to small tree and bore numerous inflorescences at the branch tips. The flowers ranged in color from pale lavender to wisteria‑like purple and possessed a bilabiate corolla with stamens clearly protruding beyond the corolla. The inflorescences were not composed of a single erect spike but branched into a panicle with lateral branches, creating an overall cloud‑like volume. This structure corresponds to the typical inflorescence morphology described for Vitex agnus‑castus. Leaves were opposite and palmately compound. The leaflets numbered generally five, occasionally seven, were narrowly lanceolate with an almost entire margin, and the leaf underside showed a grayish pubescence. While allowing for horticultural individual variation, these morphological traits are consistent with the taxonomic description of this species.
