Wine Current Affairs | Beaujolais Nouveau Release
The third Thursday of November is the release day for Beaujolais Nouveau.
The 2025 Beaujolais Nouveau seems to have evolved into a more complex and profound flavor, with the artificial banana aroma (a scent unique to Nouveau that occurs during the fermentation process) that was once common now fading into the background.
What is the taste like this year?
According to wine features in French media such as Le Figaro, the 2025 Nouveau is characterized by a high-purity fruitiness centered on strawberries and raspberries. A moderate density is added to the light and easy-drinking mouthfeel, making its balance stand out. The finish combines juiciness with a refreshing crispness. Overall, it leaves a round, supple, and well-balanced impression, overturning the conventional image of a 'simple' wine that is merely light, and is said to be finished in a way that suggests it can be enjoyed until the next season. I feel like I hear good comments every year, but I'm looking forward to it!
Small in quantity, but high in quality
According to estimates by the French Ministry of Agriculture, domestic wine production in 2025 fell below average due to the effects of climate change and other factors, and Beaujolais also saw its lowest yield in recent years.
Although the harvest volume has decreased, the quality is rated as 'delicate and elegant.' Inter Beaujolais, the organization representing wine producers in the Beaujolais region, also emphasizes the richness of the fruit and the well-balanced finish. Sales volume has declined from approximately 22 million bottles in 2018 to approximately 14.3 million bottles in 2024, continuing a long-term downward trend. However, the trend of 'less quantity, better quality' has become clear.
Japan is the largest export market for Beaujolais, with approximately 1.9 million bottles imported in 2024.
Tips for enjoying Nouveau
Temperature control is important to enjoy Beaujolais Nouveau more deliciously. The official recommended temperature is around 12°C. If you chill it too much, the aroma will close up, so a short cooling time of less than an hour in the refrigerator is appropriate. Choosing the right glass is also a key point to bring out the light fruitiness. Choosing a slightly smaller glass rather than a large one will concentrate the aroma and make it easier to enjoy. It pairs well with a wide range of foods, not only cheese and charcuterie but also Japanese home-cooked dishes like yakitori and teriyaki chicken.
Recent trends surrounding Beaujolais
New challenges are underway in the production area. Fleurie, Moulin-à-Vent, and Brouilly are in the process of applying for 'Premier Cru' status. This is a system similar to Burgundy that recognizes particularly excellent vineyards, and it is an initiative that demonstrates the diversity and high quality of Beaujolais. While the road to approval seems like a long battle, refining the map of the production area and communicating it clearly to consumers is an important step in increasing the brand value of Beaujolais. Furthermore, although Beaujolais Nouveau was once often mocked as a 'one-night-only wine,' in recent years it has evolved into an authentic wine with the potential for aging. Changes in harvest timing due to climate change and the efforts of producers have brought about more mature fruit and complex flavors. The trend of higher quality despite lower quantity is consistent with the trends in the global wine market, not just in France. For consumers, its value as an opportunity to experience French wine culture is increasing, rather than it being just a seasonal event. Meanwhile, the international situation is also affecting Beaujolais. With a 15% tariff imposed on EU wines in the United States since August 2025, the impact on the lower-priced Nouveau is unclear. The uncertainty of the export environment poses a major challenge for future market strategies.
Around me
As I am currently studying abroad in France, I will experience the Beaujolais Nouveau release locally for the first time in my life (a bit of an exaggeration). That said, I am far from the Beaujolais region and thought it wouldn't be as much of a topic as it is in Japan, but a 'Beaujolais Release Party' was suddenly added to the school schedule during lunch break, so it looks like there will be an opportunity for a toast at noon (if it actually happens...).
In the evening, there is a release event at a wine bar in town, and I plan to go with some wine-loving classmates.
I would like to summarize the situation on the release day and the wines I encountered separately.
