Bokuwata, where many employees are freelancers or have side jobs. What is their realistic way of working?
Hello.
I'm Yupi, and I'm in charge of public relations at Bokuwata Inc., a venture company in its fourth year.
Most of our members are people who also do other work outside of Bokuwata, such as being business owners, freelancers, or employees with side jobs.
I myself, who manage the PR team, also do various jobs, such as writing for various media, teaching interview writing at a school, and writing books.
This time, for those who are “working as a freelancer (or company employee) but want to try working in other organizations too!” I will talk openly about how I, as a freelancer, interact with Bokuwata!
Yuki Ishikawa (Yupi) (@milkprincess17)
After working at the Web media/Shin R25 editorial department, she became an independent writer in 2019. She mainly writes interviews and columns. She is involved in public relations at Bokuwata Inc. Her books include "Writing Habits," "Listening Habits," and "I'll Live With My Clumsy Self."
Work style: Working only on fixed days, "Monday and Thursday"
In my case, since I have my main job as a writer, I only work at Bokuwata on Mondays and Thursdays.
I feel that the fun of being a freelancer is being able to interact loosely with various companies without fully committing to one company, so that's how I ended up working.
A work style where I look at Slack every day or reply immediately doesn't suit my personality, so by intentionally fixing the days, I can have necessary meetings consolidated on those days, and it's easier to set deadlines, so it's very easy to work.
Since I've fixed the days, I also thoroughly avoid looking at Slack on days other than Monday and Thursday, maintaining a work-life balance!
In addition to clearly stating "Monday/Thursday work" in my Slack name, the representative also proactively blocks out my schedule, so I am grateful for an environment where those around me understand and cooperate.
Job content: If you raise your hand and say "I want to do this!", they will respond
Currently, I am mainly helping with the company's public relations and branding.
There are several members in PR, so I leave media relations and writing to them, and I mainly focus on editing and content production.
・Meetings related to PR and the organization
・Note content production direction and editing
・Press release interviews, writing, and submission
That said, Bokuwata is an environment where if you raise your hand and say "I want to do this!", they will let you do it, so I was able to interview various artists for "CQ," a project that encourages behavioral change toward the realization of a carbon-neutral society.
Besides that, I've also tried advertising copywriting, and since various projects are moving across the company, it's also a good point that I can actively get involved if there's something I like.
How to interact with the company: Keep it moderately loose
And as for how I interact with the company... I have a very loose way of interacting, if anything (laughs).
Since I often wander around both domestically and internationally, I don't participate very actively in drinking parties or workations. I'm also not great with large groups, so I basically stay involved in a relaxed way from home.
However, I do enjoy interacting at drinking parties for my PR team and the management staff. So, there are some close members I interact with often, and others I only know by face.
The mandatory company events are mainly the 'Boku to Watashi to Meeting' held at the end of the month and the annual 'Boku to Watashi to General Meeting,' so it's a bit refreshing to talk to people I'm meeting for the first time as an icebreaker. It is basically a close-knit organization, but I personally like that it's not forced!
Of course, I think it's an environment where you could blend into the organization if you wanted to, but for an introvert like me, it suits my nature to help out with part of the work as a member, satisfy my sense of belonging, and strictly maintain my free style as a freelancer.
People who have a certain level of skill and can act on their own initiative can shine.
That's how Boku to Watashi to is, and there are many people who treat even someone like me, who is socially awkward, in a friendly way. Recently, the number of millennials has increased, but I get the impression that communication is flat regardless of age.
Many people have started their own businesses, so while they seem busy, they are people who love to work. Even among them, it is a golden rule to have at least one outstanding skill.
Since it is still a startup, to be honest, there is no well-developed training system, so it is not suitable for people who want to be taught everything. Rather than wanting to be a member of the Avengers, you are expected to already have the immediate capabilities equivalent to the Avengers.
I believe the reason I am able to work successfully by adjusting my schedule to only 'Mondays and Thursdays' is because my skills are evaluated to a certain extent and I am able to carry out the required tasks.
Working in PR was a first for me at Boku to Watashi to, but because my writing and content creation skills as a writer were valued, I was hired even without experience.
So, even if the industries you have been involved in so far are different, if you can apply your skills in a different job category, I think there is plenty of potential!
In addition to the job categories listed here, those who do not see a desired position can also propose one themselves under 'Other Positions.' If you are interested, please apply!
【Summary: Things I like about Boku to Watashi to】
1. Can work flexibly and in a relaxed way
2. Can fulfill what you want to do
3. Not forced to be 'one with the organization'
See you later!
