What are the ways to handle situations where a couple cannot agree on a floor plan?
Hello. This is Narazaki, a housing consultant!
Building a home is a once-in-a-lifetime event. I am sure that both you and your spouse, as well as your family, have your own specific preferences, dreams, and hopes. It is only natural that there will be some aspects of planning your home, such as the floor plan, where you and your spouse simply cannot agree.
What are the ways to handle situations where a couple cannot agree on a floor plan?
Even if you are in agreement on the overall direction of building your home, there are often differences between men and women regarding what they consider good in terms of appearance, design, and color, and sometimes the parts you want to focus on are completely opposite.
Among these, I often hear that when it comes to the floor plan in particular, couples have different needs, priorities, and levels of importance, making it difficult to reach a decision.
Therefore, this time, I would like to talk about how to handle situations where you and your spouse are generally in agreement on the direction of building your home, but are struggling because you cannot agree on the floor plan.

Separate what you agree on from what you do not
Before considering the specific floor plan, write down the parts that you and your spouse each want to achieve or focus on in the floor plan. At this stage, it does not matter if they are small things, as long as they relate to the floor plan. The important thing is to write down everything you can think of.
Once you have both written them down, compile only the points you agree on into a "List of Agreements." Even if the way you express them is slightly different, if the hopes or opinions are generally the same, merge them into a single shared hope and treat them as the top priority for both of you.
Prioritize the points you do not agree on
By now, you should be left with only the points that you and your spouse do not agree on. Next, have each of you prioritize all of your remaining hopes. You should now have a table of points where your opinions or hopes do not match, with priorities assigned to them.
To understand each other's wishes, try exchanging them and reading through everything. You might be able to understand a little better what your partner considers important, right?
At this point, if there are parts where you can understand your partner's thoughts and are willing to accommodate each other, add them to the initial "List of Agreements." Otherwise, you should be left with a "List of Disagreements" containing completely different opinions or even opposite hopes.
Decide based on the balance between cost and wishes
If you try to fulfill every single wish of both you and your spouse, you will likely end up with a massive floor plan. Therefore, you will inevitably have to decide on the overall priorities.
In that case, using the "list of disagreements" as a basis, it works well to consult with your housing company or contractor representative. By checking how much it would cost to fulfill those specific points, you can decide while balancing costs and your wishes—determining what you can compromise on, what you cannot, what you will give up if it costs too much, or how much you are willing to spend to make it happen.
Conclusion
While the time spent considering a floor plan can be difficult, it is also an enjoyable time for you and your family to work together toward completing your home. Things you thought you absolutely had to have at the beginning may change in priority or feel unnecessary as you continue your discussions.
Basically, once the floor plan is decided, the specifications meetings and construction will proceed based on that plan, so it cannot be changed later. Conversely, if the floor plan is not decided, it would be pointless to have meetings about specifications.
Creating a floor plan is the first major hurdle in building a home. I hope that you and your family will work together to build a home that everyone is satisfied with. If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to consult with us.
