Imagine the panic of a housewife who planned to wake up at 6:00 AM only to realize it was 10:30 AM.
Yesterday was a very busy day due to my son's extracurricular activities. On top of that, I hadn't been able to get much sleep, so I managed to get through the day while feeling lightheaded.
I was scheduled to get home around 10:00 PM. In the car on the way back, I had already firmly made up my mind.
Today! Just for today!
I am going to fall asleep on the living room sofa with pride!!
Originally, falling asleep unintentionally is what it means to doze off, so strictly speaking... no, even without speaking strictly, that is not dozing off. Since I am planning it, it is just 'living room sleeping'.
Tonight, I will abandon all my chores and prioritize sleep. Both my body and mind are exhausted. I tell myself that in times like these, taking care of myself is the most important thing.
The sink is still filled with the mess from the hurried breakfast I made for the two of them this morning. The additional dishes and the bath will have to wait until tomorrow morning.
...And taking off my makeup, too. Honestly, I struggled with this one. But, sorry future me! I will do my best to at least brush my teeth.
I have a rule that I don't work on the morning after a long weekend. Tomorrow, my son has morning practice for his relay race, so I have to be up at 5:50 AM. After I send the kids off to school, I'll slowly take care of the chores one by one.
I turned off the lights, wrapped myself in a blanket, and lay down on the sofa.
And then, when I suddenly woke up, it was 10:30 AM.
Wait, what about the kids' school!? What should I do? Was there some important event today? Even if there wasn't, it's terrible for my daughter, who is preparing for entrance exams, to have such a flashy oversleeping incident at this time of year! Maybe the school has called. To have slept until 10:30 AM with my family and not noticed is an unprecedented blunder!!!
The moment I woke up and checked the clock, all those thoughts swirled in my brain at once, and the blood drained from my face. My children have never been late because of my oversleeping. I jumped up as gracefully as if I were in a manga and ran to the bedroom in a panic.
...It was empty. Neither my son nor my daughter was there.
I couldn't help but collapse on the spot. While dazed, I somehow forced my brain to work at full capacity to organize my memories.
Oh, I did send the kids off properly, didn't I.
I woke my son up on time for his morning practice, made him breakfast, and laughed at his crazy bedhead.
In the bedroom, where the intro to the CreepHyp song that my daughter had set as her alarm with the firm confidence that 'this will definitely wake me up' was blaring in vain, I shook my daughter, who wouldn't wake up at all.
While asking my daughter, who was having her usual busy morning, 'Won't you at least eat an apple?', I cleared away the dishes I had piled up last night.
In fact, after I safely sent the kids off, I even enjoyed some Ogura toast myself. I thought about going to a cafe I'd never been to before with a book I hadn't read yet. Going to Tsutaya Books would be nice, too.
It seems I truly fell asleep there. And when I woke up again, all memories of the morning had vanished.
It's that thing that happens sometimes when you're sick in bed or when you fall asleep at an odd time and wake up with a start, where you lose your sense of time and place.
I was truly panicked. The most panic and reflex action of the year.
I suppose I am still tired after all.
I'll skip the cafe and Tsutaya Books, and I think I'll just spend the day relaxing at home.
