[30-Day OJT Note | Day 25] 'Buffer Time' to Reduce Stress
For those who, once accustomed to their work at a dispatch site, were tasked with 'teaching the new temp' and ended up having to do everything on their own.
For those who have nothing to compare their methods against and are feeling anxious.
I am writing this for you.
Continuing OJT inevitably leads to stress buildup.
'My own work isn't progressing.'
'The new hire isn't picking things up quickly.'
If you bottle up that frustration, it will affect your instruction.
What is important here is to consciously create buffer time.
1. Don't overpack your schedule
If you fill your schedule completely, the whole thing will fall apart with the slightest delay.
Adding about 15 minutes of free time into your day will make you feel more at ease.
2. Reset with small breaks
• Drink tea slowly
• Stand up and walk down the hallway
• Look outside from the window
Taking even just a few minutes to create a 'break' will reduce stress.
3. Create an approachable atmosphere
Setting aside buffer time increases your own peace of mind.
This naturally shows in your facial expressions and tone of voice,
which also leads to an 'atmosphere where it's easy to ask questions' for the new hire.
4. You can also use it for reflection time
Buffer time isn't just for resting; you can also use it to briefly jot down 'what you taught today'.
Having this habit will stabilize the quality of your instruction.
Summary for today
• Add about 15 minutes of buffer time to your schedule
• Small breaks lead to stress reduction
• Having buffer time makes it easier for new hires to ask questions
• Using it for reflection improves the quality of instruction
