Bali Travelogue Part 4: [Bali Gourmet] Enjoying Exquisite Babi Guling at Ibu Oka, a Famous Restaurant Loved by Locals
The traditional Balinese dish 'Babi Guling' means roasted suckling pig.
Packed with plenty of spices and roasted over a long period, this dish is indispensable for festivals and ceremonial occasions.
The golden skin is crispy and fragrant, while the meat inside is tender and juicy, with the deep aroma of spices spreading with every bite.
As a dish that symbolizes Balinese culture, it has now gained popularity among tourists as well.
The place where you can enjoy its authentic taste is the famous Ubud restaurant, 'Warung Babi Guling Ibu Oka'.
Warung Babi Guling Ibu Oka is a popular local eatery located just a few minutes' walk from the Ubud Palace.
Based on the traditional recipe passed down by the founder, 'Ibu Oka,' they still serve Babi Guling that is carefully prepared by hand.
There is a constant line from the morning in front of the shop, where the aroma of savory pork and spices drifts.
The appeal lies in the fact that they do not cater to tourists at all, allowing you to enjoy the 'real taste of Bali' that locals eat every day.
The gentle breeze of Ubud flows through the simple wooden interior, making you feel the warmth as if you were invited into a local home.
The unpretentious space and authentic taste make this shop a symbol of Balinese gourmet.
The Babi Guling at Warung Babi Guling Ibu Oka was truly a dish where one could experience the 'authentic taste.' The skin was surprisingly crispy, and the savory flavor spread the moment it entered the mouth. The spice profile was unique, with the characteristic sting of the seasonings tingling the nose, accentuating the exotic taste typical of Bali.
The texture varies depending on the part of the meat; some parts are tender and juicy, while others feel slightly dry. However, the seasoning is well-balanced overall, and the rich spices enhance the compatibility with the rice.
The sausage served as a side dish is worth mentioning. It is grilled until fragrant on the outside, and when you take a bite, the meat juices overflow from within. While spicy, it has just the right amount of saltiness, and this sausage alone had a presence worthy of a main dish.
The meal is served in a one-plate style, with savory pork, spicy side dishes, and fluffy cooked rice beautifully arranged. The price is about 700 yen in Japanese currency, offering cost performance that you wouldn't expect from a tourist destination.
I visited in the afternoon after the peak time, so there was no line and I was seated immediately. Inside the shop, I saw many locals mixed in with tourists, which made me realize that it is a famous restaurant loved by the local people.

The interior of Warung Babi Guling Ibu Oka gave me the impression of being closer to a sophisticated restaurant than a local eatery. All seats are indoors, the lighting is soft, and cleanliness is thoroughly maintained. There is none of the rough atmosphere typical of local food, making it an environment where even tourists can dine with peace of mind.
Although I could not see the cooking process directly, the essence of the dish Babi Guling lies in the 'roasted whole pig.' From the way the skin was grilled and how the spices had soaked in, one could see the skilled craftsmanship in the preparation and roasting stages. In particular, the ability to enjoy different textures from different parts of the pork is the real thrill of this dish, and the savory aroma of the roast and the complex scent of the spices were in perfect harmony.
The spices are unique and different from the seasonings found in general Chinese or Indian cuisine. Balinese-specific herbs like galangal, turmeric, and lemongrass are intricately mixed, and a new layer of flavor rises with every bite. It was impressive that the way the aroma emerged was rounded, with not just spiciness, but also sweetness and acidity delicately intertwined.
Babi Guling is originally a special dish served at festivals and ceremonies in Bali, and considering its cultural background, the meaning this dish holds goes beyond mere local food. The composition, which allows you to fully enjoy the deliciousness of the pork through various parts, can truly be called a 'microcosm of local food culture.'
The lingering aftertaste is long, and the scent of the spices remains pleasantly at the back of the tongue. It was a level of perfection that made me want to visit again, without the greasiness of the fat. The fusion of a level of perfection that transcends the realm of local food and a sophisticated space supports the popularity of this shop.
Warung Babi Guling Ibu Oka is located in the center of Ubud, in a location that is easy to access from the palace and the market. It is a popular restaurant where you can experience the local atmosphere and authentic taste at the same time, at a distance that allows you to stop by during your sightseeing.
As for transportation, using a chartered car is the most realistic option. Traffic jams occur easily in Bali regardless of the area, and it often takes time to move, especially around noon. Therefore, it is desirable to have a flexible schedule and plan sightseeing and meals as a set.
Around Ibu Oka, tourist spots such as the Ubud Palace and the Monkey Forest are scattered, making it easy to naturally incorporate into your sightseeing route. After finishing your meal, it is an ideal area for strolling, such as taking a break at a nearby cafe or enjoying shopping at the Ubud Market.
Visiting especially from the morning to early afternoon allows you to enjoy your meal in peace before the tourist crowds arrive. Despite being a local gourmet spot, its convenience and ease of inclusion in tourist itineraries are among the reasons Ibu Oka has been loved for so many years.
Actually, I spent more time than expected buying souvenirs, so my lunch was a bit delayed, but as it turned out, I was lucky to have a relaxing time because of that.
The restaurant is completely indoors and clean, which pleasantly defied my impression that local food equals a rustic and rough environment. Since it is a whole roasted pig, you can enjoy different textures and flavors from each part, and it feels fresh. The spices are unique, with a fragrance and depth I have never tasted before, lingering gently in the mouth. It felt very Balinese but was not too overpowering, making it a flavor that is easy for Japanese people to enjoy.
The food was brought out about 10 minutes after ordering, and the staff were smiling and friendly. It was impressive to be able to enjoy the meal with peace of mind.
The price was under 1,000 yen in Japanese currency, which is actually quite reasonable in Bali, where tourist prices are common. I felt very full and was highly satisfied with the cost-performance as well.
I used a chartered car for transportation. Although it is an area with a lot of traffic congestion, traffic risks are inherent wherever you go. I recommend planning your schedule with plenty of time in advance.
