How to Read Academic Papers
Reading academic papers may feel difficult at first, but by focusing on a few key points, anyone can learn to understand them effectively. Here, I will explain the basic steps for reading a paper in an easy-to-understand way.
1. Clarify your purpose
Before reading a paper, clarify why you are reading it. If your purpose is clear, you can efficiently find the information you need. For example, your purpose might be to deepen your knowledge on a specific topic, learn research methodologies, or obtain new ideas or data.
2. Understand the structure of the paper
Academic papers generally follow this structure:
Title: Indicates the subject of the paper in a single phrase.
Abstract: Contains an overview of the entire paper. By reading the abstract, you can quickly grasp the main content and conclusions of the paper.
Introduction: Explains the background and purpose of the research. It describes why this research is important and what problems it aims to solve.
Methods: Details how the research was conducted. It explains specific experimental methods and data collection techniques.
Results: Shows the research findings using data, charts, and graphs.
Discussion: Discusses the interpretation of the results, comparisons with other studies, and the limitations of the research.

3. Read the abstract first
