Fujiwara no Sanesuke — The Chronicle of One Who Witnessed the End of Prosperity 26
1. Living Within Power
I lived within power. I knew the shape of power, I knew the weight of power, and I heard the sound of power crumbling away.
The Imperial Court was magnificent. Yet, that magnificence had lost its roots. People were intoxicated by rituals, and only words remained.
"Power is that which whittles away at people to maintain its form."
2. The Brush of the Shōyūki
My brush existed for the sake of record-keeping. Yet, a record is sometimes a cold blade.
I wrote down exactly what I saw. Who laughed, and who remained silent. That was my work.
"The brush is a blade that carves the truth. If emotion is mixed in, history becomes clouded."
3. The End of Prosperity
The Fujiwara house was at the pinnacle of prosperity. But the pinnacle is always beginning to crumble. I knew this.
Power is inherited through blood, but reason is inherited through people. I witnessed the flow of blood and recorded the flow of reason.
"Prosperity blinds people, and records awaken them."
4. The Night of Kichū
In the year of Kichū, I lay down my brush. Under the lamplight, I think quietly.
What I wrote was not the prosperity of men, but the flow of time itself.
"A record is that which captures the breath of time."
5. Conclusion
I maintained my composure amidst prosperity and held my brush amidst ruin. That is my life's work.
"People flourish, and nations shift. But if the brush leaves it behind, that voice will reach even a thousand years later.""
◆ Fujiwara no Michinaga × Fujiwara no Sanesuke
Ideological Dialogue — The One Who Builds Prosperity and the One Who Records It
🌕 Michinaga
“Lord Sanesuke. I hear you have recorded my era with a cold eye. But power exists to be used. If it is not used, the nation will not move.”
📜 Sanesuke
“Lord Michinaga. I did not record it with a cold eye; I merely transcribed the facts as they were. If there are those who use power, there are also those who become intoxicated by it. It is my role to record that.”
🏯 Michinaga
“Even if there are those who become intoxicated, I placed my house at the center of the state. The ties with the Imperial Court are a technique to stabilize the nation. How did your brush view that?”
📜 Sanesuke
“As a technique, it is magnificent. But techniques sometimes erode the system. If a house becomes too strong, the bones of the nation weaken. I recorded that ‘creaking’.”
🌕 Michinaga
“Creaking exists in every era. Even so, my era flourished. How did you feel about that prosperity?”
📜 Sanesuke
“Prosperity is beautiful. But the more beautiful something is, the more easily it crumbles. I heard the sound of it crumbling. If there is no one to record that, what will future generations learn?”
🔥 Michinaga
“Future generations, you say? I tried to build the future with my own hands. What did you entrust to the future?”
📜 Sanesuke
“I entrusted ‘understanding’ to the future. How your era moved, how it crumbled, and how it connected to the next era. If there is someone who knows that, the future can avoid the same mistakes.”
🌙 Michinaga
“I see. You did not move; you simply watched and recorded. Is that your form of politics?”
📜 Sanesuke
"Record-keeping is also a part of politics. If there are those who act, there must be those who observe. You moved the era, and I preserved it. Because of that, the Heian period will be spoken of a thousand years from now."
◆ The Conclusion of the Two
Michinaga created the era. Sanesuke preserved the era. Only when the one who creates and the one who preserves are both present does an era become "history."
