People I Want to Work With, Part 14: Those Who Take a Stand (But Are Modest in Front of Clients)
In this context, 'taking a stand' means clearly indicating which side you are on when there are multiple options.
A certain strategy consultant prepares options without any gaps or overlaps, and logically explains the pros and cons of each.
Then, they ask the client, 'Which option would you like to choose?'
Client: 'Hmm, I wonder which one to pick? This is a tough one... Which one do you think is best?'
Consultant: 'My personal opinion is irrelevant. I have provided all the information necessary for you to make a decision. Please decide.'
Client: 'Hmm, even if you say that...'
Cut. Let's redo this. <Take 2>
(Time travel back to the past) And then, they ask the client, 'Which option would you like to choose?'
Client: 'Hmm, I wonder which one to pick? This is a tough one... Which one do you think is best?'
Consultant: 'I believe Option A is the best. Considering the current market situation and your company's resources, I am convinced that Option A, which starts small and grows big, is the best choice.'
Client: 'I see. That's a perspective I hadn't considered. Let's go with Option A then.'
This looks good at first glance, but it is a pattern that will cause problems later. If Option A does not go well, there is a possibility of trouble, such as the client saying, 'We did it because you told us to.'
Cut. Let's redo this. <Take 3>
(Time travel back to the past) And then, they ask the client, 'Which option would you like to choose?'
Client: 'Hmm, I wonder which one to pick? This is a tough one... Which one do you think is best?'
Consultant: 'President, you say that, but you actually have an idea in mind, don't you? Could you share that with me?'
Client: 'Well, if you put it that way, I suppose I do. I've thought about it a lot, and I think Option A is the way to go.'
Consultant: 'I thought so too. Please turn to the next page. I have written down my recommendation in advance, and it is Option A.'
Client: 'Oh, I see. I feel confident moving forward with this. Thanks.'
If your thoughts differ, you can engage in a heated discussion from that point on.
In any case, they clearly state their position. I want to work with people like that.
P.S.
Going back in time with a time machine reminds me of a party trick I often did during my college days.
A quick announcement.
My book was released on May 10th. If you are someone who wants to do what you love regardless of the money, I would be very happy if you would read it.
