"Hide and Seek
Animal Look-and-Find Picture Book"

"Animals hide various things.
A picture book full of fun surprises. Also includes a number-play element."
https://www.ehonnavi.net/ehon00.asp?no=159
" 'Who hid the gloves?'.
It was the two chickens.
It seems to be around their heads.
Now, next...
'Who hid the toothbrush?'.
It was the three crocodiles.
Look closely, where did they hide it?
Now, next...
'Who hid the socks?'.
It was the four tanuki.
I found it, there it is...
A combination of a search-and-find book and a counting book.
The left page asks what is being hidden,
and the reader strains their eyes on the right page to find the hidden object.
The animals and insects appearing on the right page
increase by one each time,
so the pages become livelier as you turn them,
making the challenge of finding the objects more fun.
Also, speaking of challenges,
not all the objects on the right page
are contained within the square page.
By intentionally not fitting the whole thing in,
movement is created within the page,
and the disorder born from this movement
further raises the level of the search-and-find and counting game.
A small-format picture book that parents and children can enjoy together."

"Who hid the gloves?
Who hid the toothbrush?
Who hid the socks?
Who hid the candle?
Who hid the hat?
Who hid the magnet?
Who hid the scooter?
Who hid the flag?
Who hid the pencil?
Who hid the playing cards?
Who hid the fork and spoon"

A search-and-find game repeated 11 times.
Every time you turn the page,
the animals and insects drawn in pale colors
increase by one.
At the end, there are 12 children.
How cute.

"A picture book I thought was 'cool'
I brought the original drawings for 'Yubi-kun' and others
to Bunka Publishing Bureau, the publisher of
Susumu Shingu's 'Strawberry' (1975),
and learned that publishers have their own specialty formats.
They showed me the 'Animal Look-and-Find Picture Book' series,
including Chuta Shin's 'Hat' and 'Tail', saying,
'We focus on small-format editions.'
The nearly square 16.5 x 17.9 cm size
felt strangely right as an object's shape
(perfect for a toddler to hold),
and it was a stylish set of two books in a slipcase.
I was so happy that I finished drawing this book a week later.
It was the first time I became conscious of format,
and 'the degree of freedom in drawing increased.'
It was also my first time drawing a pair of books,
placing colorful tile patterns on both covers,
with green (for 'Who Ate It?') and
pink (for 'Who Hid It?') spines,
and including detailed picture patterns on the endpapers,
enjoying the book-making process from corner to corner.
As a result, it won the Sankei Children's Book Publishing Award the year after publication.
It was an epoch-making work,
and the first award-winning book for Bunka Publishing Bureau."
